We will be visiting Arnhem Land via central Arnhem road, they only allow 15 cars a day "past the front gate", leaving
Katherine 1st August for 10 days. . Have all the land council permits etc. and will be visiting
Bawaka Homeland in one of the remotest locations in Arnhem land with 4*4 access only expecting some great fishing and crabbing. I still can't believe that for all the remote 4*4 adventures to be had in Australia that no-one on this
forum has ever been there or even wants to go there according to the lack of feedback I have received. Hoping to hear from another "White Fella" didge player.

just that people are rather busy at this time of year perhaps ... I hadn't seen your message.
I know of some who have been up that way a lot, but for whatever reason haven't commented.
As for wanting to go there, some of us would love to have some time to spend more of it there ;-)
Cheers
Andrew who can't play a didge without getting lip pins and needles.

Yes Andrew you have responded to my posts before on Arnhem Land. What area do you operate in for your commercial tours? It seems that there is a little relaxation of restrictions in Arnhem Land with a few more of the "Locals" being approved to accept tourists onto their land and conduct cultural tours. I plan to plot a full trip plot/trek note for Exploreoz to make it a little easier for other on this site in the future. It has taken me 6 months to get the required info but I must say that when I got onto the right people they were more than co-operative and helpful.

Graham,
We went therr\e July 2006 visited Garig Ganuk Barlu National
park on Cobourg penninsula for a week. Truth is there is only 15 cars permitted to
camp in the
park at any time.
It's a wonderful place
well worth the effort to get there and the fishing is pure magic if you have a boat and you will need some heavy gear. Take a hand spear because you can spear mud crabs off
the beach.
I haven't seen any previous posts from you about this.

Many people have been to Arnhemland.
It is a great place but with all the restrictions, especially access to beaches etc, it does not rate high on the agenda of the average traveller.

I guess I'm not average...Like to go where no-one has been..be the first etc..etc.
By the way I have found no restrictions regarding beach driving south of
Nhulunbuy except for a couple of sacred sites. The Dhumuru land council publish a beautiful visitors guide admitedly they ask $10 for it but it gives all the info you could ask for and are very friendly on the phone from 3500 kms away!!
Thanks for your response Willem you are a very helpful and positive contributor to this site on a wide range of topics ..Keep up the great work....Maybe we need a vote to elect you as the "Mayor of Exploroz"??

Hahahaha!! Mayor indeed.
I am pleased to hear that restrictions have been lifted slightly. I will be north later in July and will check it out for myself.
Have been out to Gurig(Cobourg)NP some years ago and also into some wild country east of the
Katherine River and south of
Kakadu as
well as some
places north of the Roper. Fascinating country.
Yeah I tend to want to go to
places less travelled too. Am sort of booked up for the next three years now trying to get there before the 'masses' discover them or that they may be closed off indefinitely. The trouble is I write about my travels, publish them on the internet and this makles the next person want to go there too. And so before long it could become a mainstream destination. Hopefully not!!
Cheers

Hi Graham,
I've been living in
Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsular for the past 3 months and we go off exploring the fantastic country around here on our days off each week.
You can see some of the country on our photo diary page at:
www.christec.com.au/latest.htm
Feel free to email me if you want more info on the great
camping spots around here and info on how to get the necessary permits etc.
Cheers,
Chris

Wow thanks for the post Chris we are booked to stay with you August 2nd. Have had a look at your web site ...some fabulous pictures there. A couple of questions......can we obtain our Dhimurru permits through you before we arrive or must we go to their office in person when we arrive? We would like to get a special permit for Gaparu and Ganami plus
Cape Arnhem. We are booked for at least 2 nights at
Bawaka already and are interested in your input of any other good spots that you have found. We are also aware that the Garma festival is on while we will be there and have researched their web site thoroughly but can't find out if it will be possible to visit the festival site as casual one day visitors. It seems that to attend one must register for the 5 days. Is this correct or can you give us a contact at Garma to clarify this?
Many thanks
Graham

Hi Graham,
To my knowledge you need a permit from the Northern Lands Council to transit the Central Arnhem Road, this is free but there may be restrictions on vehicle numbers allowed in at any one time.
Check: www.nlc.org.au/
Once at
Nhulunbuy you'll need a Dhimurru general pass to visit most
places outside the town limits and then special permits to visit and
camp at
places like
Cape Arnhem (Wanuwuy),
Scout Camp (Mananggaymi),
Memorial Park (Gapuru), Wonga
Creek (Ganami) etc. Most of these special permit areas have a restriction of 5 cars allowed in at any one time. To have any chance of getting a permit it's best to visit these special permit areas on weekdays as Gove locals, mainly the Alcan workers tend to book the weekends out for weeks ahead over the dry season. We have our days of during the week for this reason and have never had trouble getting a special permit so far.
Check: www.dhimurru.com.au/permitsSpec.html
I don't know anything about the Garma festival except that the Walkabout is fully booked but I'll get my wife
Laura to email you some info about it.
I have been to almost every remote area in Australia and rate East Arnhem Land very highly for the beautiful unspoilt
places that you can visit and
camp at. We only need to travel 50km from our home at the Walkabout and we can
camp by a lovely stream with waterfalls of sparkling fresh
water and we have the
places to ourselves.
Cheers,
Chris
