Fears for German tourists in outback
July 5, 2007 - 3:00PM

Two German tourists are feared missing after failing to arrive in Darwin a month after leaving Uluru.

Holger Richter and Kathrin Kleinbauer, both 31, were due to arrive in Darwin on Monday before travelling to Perth via the remote Gunbarrel Highway, Northern Territory police said.

Detective Senior Constable Kerry Harris said the pair had been keeping in weekly contact with a Sydney friend.

However this friend reported them missing on Thursday after they failed to arrive, as scheduled, at his niece's home in Darwin on Monday.

Det Harris said the tourists were travelling in an older style Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD with WA registration plates 1CK 487.

He said they were well prepared with camping provisions, food and water

So one presumes that they knew where they were a week ago (when they contacted Sydney friend) and have some idea of their intentions on the same basis. Constable Kerry could have provided this as a point of reference for those on the lookout!

Kind regards

At least they did let people know where they were going......... Am sure they will be found. good for them...... :)
Better than what I do..... No body knows where I am or go...... In fact I really don't think they care. They have an atitude that I will call in 3 or 4 months???????? Yeah right.......... I once didn't make it to my old mans place once after I said I would be there, When I asked him why he did not look any further he replied "It dosen't matter where you are in Oz you will always find a way to survive" But it was 3 months before he knew I was ok

Fears for tourists missing in NT
July 6, 2007 - 10:56AM

Police are attempting to contact the families of two German tourists who failed to arrive in Darwin after travelling in the Northern Territory.

But detectives have stressed they are not treating the case as sinister and consider the travellers to be simply overdue.

Holger Richter and Kathrin Kleinbauer, both 31, last spoke to friends on a mobile phone on June 19 while they were visiting Uluru in Australia's centre.

The pair, who arrived in Australia in December last year on a 12-month working visa, told friends they planned to visit the Olgas before travelling to Darwin and then on to Perth.

They had been keeping in weekly contact with a Sydney friend, who reported them missing yesterday after they failed to arrive, as scheduled, at his niece's home.

Detective Senior Constable Kerry Harris today said there had been no response from the public following the media coverage in the past 24 hours.

"Inquires have also commenced with immigration authorities regarding locating their families," he said.

"We are endeavouring to obtain photos of the missing couple but all this will take time ... .

"I want to stress that at this stage we are still treating this as an overdue travelling party."

Det Harris said the tourists were travelling in an older style Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD with WA registration plates 1CK 487.

He said they were well prepared with camping provisions, food and water.

The last tourist to go missing in the NT outback was Queenslander Oswald Orman.

The 37-year-old was last seen trying to hitchhike along the Barkly Highway near the Barkly Homestead, 210 kilometres from Tennant Creek.
