Saw the topic posted by Georgiegirl about
the painted desert and thought I would show you a few photos I took on my recent trip.
The painted hills are located on Anna
Creek station just out from
William Creek. Anna
Creek station is the largest station in the world.
Access to
the painted hills is by plane only. The flight takes about 30 minutes from
William Creek. The hills cover an area of 30 sq
miles...
Our flight also took us over parts of Lake Eyre. I have added some photos to my photo gallery.

More nice shots RnR.
Painted Hills are different to
Painted Desert, though probably similar structures...
I gotta get out there and have a closer look.

I am sure someone will tell me if I am wrong but I think that Anna
Creek is the largest private ownership station. The largest station is corporate owned up near
Alice Springs. Can anyone confirm this ?

Hi RnR, Sorry, meant to add - very nice photos, thanks for posting them. Might have to have a look when I am up there in about a months time.

The only way you can see
the Painted Hills is by air,
no access allowed by road. When you see them you'll know why. The area deserves World
Heritage listing, and I believe is being billed by the SA Tourism as the new Bungle Bungles. There has been some mining exploration in the area which is bloody disgusting, even
walking tracks would irreparably scar the area. Anna
Creek Station stay out of the area and keep their cattle away from it. This area is pristine, and covering around 40 square kilometres, it leaves
the Breakaways and
the Painted Desert for dead. The only flights I know of are Wrights Air out of
William Creek, though someone may be flying out of
Coober Pedy. Going rate is $180 pp. Worth every cent.

Folks,
The Painted Hills and
the Painted desert are one and the same.
When driving along the track through
the Painted Desert, you are restricted to where you can go and that is a couple of
lookout points. Both of these lookouts are excellent to get a good perspective of the environment and the myriad of colours. One
lookout involves a short and interesting walk, the other is great for a champagne whilst overlooking the approaching sunset. (If you time it right)
When flying over the region with Wrightsair, out of
William Creek, Trevor takes you to an area that is not accessible by road and so you get a different perspective from a different (higher) angle. Both driving through the area and flying through it with Wrightsair are uniquely rewarding experiences.
