Hey John,
I live in karratha mate, and well, one trip from karratha to dampier and you'll count 50 or so roo's dead on the road every morning. ie: the buggers are everywhere.
Anyway the company i work for just fitted every vehicle with them, and since have had more roo strikes than before they were fitted. statistically!
So, i have never used them, but i wouldnt buy one that for sure. A solid steel bar is a better investment me thinks!
Cheers bud

It sounds like they don't make much of a difference have they had them fitted long. I 've got a Aluminum Bar. Do not travel too much at night but still hit one or two Roo's in my time. Jjust though if these were any good they may be a good investment.

John the Shu Roo i had cost me about $9.00 at the local Auto Pro shop, here in Exmouth WA the place is thick with roos, must admit I never had trouble with roos after I put Shu Roo on, but then a lot of people are not smart drivers around roos in particular those that drive around at night with high beam on when they are on the side of the roads, they tend to get dazzled and confused and charge into oncoming traffic. As for purchasing a steel roo bar that will not neccessarily save your front end either as the large males are pretty tough, I have seen then land in the front seats of a four wheel drive after coming through the front wind screen.

Cheers

These are electronic type with speaks on the front and produces a high frequency sound if they do what the box says they be useful not much of a dent to cost $400 be interested in hearing from someone who has one.

They work on Elephants.

A lot of the locals out western NSW use them. I just use the little plastic ones that stick on the outer edges of the bar. Work for me as I have not hit a roo in the past 6 years with them fitted.

I do a lot of morning and evenings drives from the farm to town, distance 55k.

John I have the cheaper version on my rig

the thing I have noticed, they do not stop them running out in front you, but you do notice/see them stick there heads up & look around which you notice & can take action or beware of them a few seconds earlier than wham their it is in front of you
or going under the bull bar & hearing that tail folding a crease in the door

good luck

John

I did research as i thought I'd seen an article that said the electronic ones work.

What i found instead was report done for NRMA, RACV, RTA NSW & SA Roads by Melbourne Uni saying they don't work.

Check it out - its only 57 pages!

Max,
Thanks for the info. Well researched article. Think we'll give it a miss. If we buy any we'll buy the six dollar one now.
Cheers

I've got one sitting in my garage...older style, all in one unit; not the current type with 2 separate speakers.

I swore by it for years, until I hit a roo. It then came off and has been collecting dust ever since. You can have it for $20- plus postage if you like, but I don't know what happened to the switch......wouldn't be hard to just use a rocker or toggle switch.

Hey John,
Here is an accidental experiment I did with my cars over the past few years.
I hit a big roo in WA in my first Subaru 20 years ago doing 80k an hour just before the turn off to Denham. It pushed the bull bar into the bonnet, bent the bonnet and destroyed the grill.
When I bought my first real 4wd, a Toyota 4runner, it had the plastic roo shoos on. In the 4 years I had the 4runner I never hit a roo but did hit an emu at 80k. That car spent many a night on the road.
When I purchased my first brand new vehicle, a Hilux. I picked it up on the friday and had it booked in on the monday for it's first 1000k service. Without the roo shoos I hit a roo. Put roo shoos on and drove from Birdsville to Sydney in one go. Took 29hrs was around bourke at night and saw the most roos ever. Had to sit on between 60 and 80 till just after sunrise but did not have a roo come out in front of me.
This Navara I have now I put the plastic roo shoos on and fell off after a few months. I could not understand why there was alot of movemt of roos on my way to Adelaide. I realiased once I got there that the roo shoos had fallen off. Promptly bought new ones for the return journey.
Have not hit wildlife in this one yet.
I think what these plastic roo shos do is whistle a high pitch noise and I have noticed that the roos simply just look up and then go back to eating.
I really don't know if they really work but they are my observations
Peter

I think a lot of this Anti -roo devices is just snake oil .
I think i could count on one hand how many time i have driven at night and i whacked a roo on the Nullabor and that was after buying the whistle devices you stick on your bumper .
The thing i did notice was the big eagles feeding on the road kill were certainly taking off sooner than they were when they wernt fitted .This lead me into a false sense of security and i ended up whacking a big male at madura pass and he sure made a mess and i was only doing 70-80 k.
I remember the guy at the service station when i asked ''do they work mate ?'' he said '' well if you hit a roo ,i guess the answer is no and if you dont i guess they do''.
