Hi again, I have been looking at 12volt lights and in particular the Torpedo Light. Does anyone know whether the 240v adapter that you can buy with these lights will work with any 12v light?

Hi Cram,

not sure if it will work with all 12v lights. I tried it with a el-cheapo light i bought from ........somewhere and it works fine.Wouldn't like to say it works with all lights but will work some....hope this helps..

If you are only using cheap 12v lights...probably try it and see...if it work all good, if it causes damage ...it's only a cheap light...just not sure if you would damage the adaptor......surely someone else will know amongst this great wealth of info we like to call ExplorOz

cheers Mick

We use the 240v adapter's that's are made for the Torpedo light's with our ARB lights when we are on van sites with power. We leave the Torpedo light at home, as we don't think they give out as much light as the others.

Thanks mate, this is the confirmation I was looking for as I have an ARB light. I am thinking of just buying the Torpedo's adapter so I can use power to run the light when power is available.

the use of the 240vAC/12vDC adapter on another light will depend entirely on how much current the light _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx.

As far as lumen output is concerned, I would dispute that the Torpedo puts out less light than other (12 volt) lights.
I have both a Torpedo and a Versalite and the light output is comparible with each other.

Of course, if one is comparing the output to a 500 watt 240 volt floodlight, I may agree with the statement, but then one needs to consider, how much light do you need when camping.

I have no issue as to whether the Torpedo puts out the same lumen as the ARB. I don't have a Torepedo and don't need to buy one as I have plenty of other light. I just was wondering whether the adapter would be of any use to me on its own.

One thing I would say about the Torpedo is that it is somewhat more expensive then comparable lights, particularly when they are on sale.

i gave the torpedo light a wrap not that long ago as a friend of mine has one but after seeing our versa light she bought one before her next camping trip as she said "it is not nearly as bright as the versa light" and after she went camping with her family her father who also has a torpedo light also was going to buy a versa light as soon as he got home as well so maybe i will have to take more notice of how bright they are when we camp with her next!!!!!

Perhaps the light output is mere perception?

The Versalite is a longer tube, whereas the Torpedo is a compact fluro.

Cram,

When you say the Torpedo is more expensive than comparable lights, I'm not sure what you mean, or what you are comparing them to.

Comparable lights to the Torpedo would be the Versalite, or the Piranha version which looks and performs identical. (Both the Versalite and Piranha are made in the same factory from the same components, but for different "brand" distributors).

What all these lights have in common is similar light output, low current drain and all retailing for just under $100.

The Versalite/Piranha are rated at 11 watt, draw max of 1 amp and are equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent globe. they have a 6,000 hour globe life and a two year warranty.

The Torpedo _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx as little a 1/2 amp and is supposedly equivalent to a 100 watt globe.

As I said I have both and find each of them excellent products. I particularly like the robustness and compact size of the Torpedo and keep it in the car at all times.
Conversely, I like the design of the supporting bracket for the Vesalite/Piranha and the way you hook it to an annex pole with a versatile height adjustment. For camping it is superb.

Surely you are not comparing a $22 light from Bunnings, or Supercheap as being comparable to these lights?

Actually I was thinking about one from the $2 shop actually....

I have a ARB light that puts off the same type of light you are talking about and it cost me $70.00. When you compare this to $90.00 thats money I would prefer in my hip pocket.

This light can be used the same way as the Piranha, and I guess the Versa (which I don't know much about), I made up a bracket similiar to the one use for Piranha and it works just fine.

I have nothing against the Torpedo or any other light for that fact, however, if I am going spend between $20 to $30 more for a product it wants to be a hell of a lot better.

I am unconvinced that this is the case.

Anyway my question was simple, I was not looking for a synopsis on the attributes of lights I have already read them by looking at the archives, I just wanted to know if anyone had used the adaptor with other lights.

Another example is the Primus light that you can currently buy for $69 from BCF that gives off the equivalent of a 75watt globe and specs say _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx 1amp. Obvioulsy it is drawing a little more then the others but would be a reasonable light for the price.

In relation to the cheaper lights you are referring too I agree 100% with what you say. I got one of these cheaper lights early in my camping life and they are rubbish.

You get what you pay for and on that point I am 100% with you.

Our Torpedo light puts out a lot less light than either of the two ARB lights we own. For this reason our Torpedo light stays in the garage and we use the ARB lights. If people are happy with their Torpedo lights, good luck to them but mine is crap.
Regards, Monkey.
