psb,
This will not be much help. A sevice station attendant once filled my landrover diesel with petrol. A mechanic I called advised us not to drive or start the car. He then arrived and drained the tank.
Yours is a vice versa situation. But I would get on to your car club for advice.
Best of luck
Jim

Don't start your car, it will cause damage to you motor. Simply drain the 20L petrol from the tank and then fill with diesel
Cheers

There is no hard and fast rule these days. You used to be able to dilute it heaps and drive away but these days some modern fuel pumps cost megabucks to replace. I would talk to your agent first.

Do not use that tank of fuel
The timing of an engine is set at a certain position Top Dead Centre of piston travel.adding petrol causes pre detonation. This means that while the piston is still travelling up the petroll explodes and is trying to send the piston back down prematurely. This causes severe strain on the big and small ends etc.and can cause an engine to burst.

I am sure you did the right thing in getting it towed to Audi. That pump and injection system on yours would not like petrol at all and would be megabucks to fix from your own pocket. I am sure Audi would not help financially in the repair work from such an incident.

Cheers, Trevor.

Hi PSB......DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't start the car, syphon out as much as you can (or you may be a lucky one that has a tank drain plug) and fill the tank to the brim with diesel....I put 110 litres of petrol in my diesel patrol.
Got it towed home located a 44gal drum from work and syphoned it into the drum. I guess there was probably about 5-10 litres of petrol left. I put around 50 litres of diesel in and drove 5 k's to the nearest service station and filled the rest up. That was about 18months ago and i have had no problems....except the occasional reminder from my wife and kids.....
The upside is that i had about 1 year's supply of mower fuel on tap while the price of petrol went through the roof.

Thanks,

Towed it to Audi and they contacted the technical dept in Germany. The response was that i should fill the remainder of the tank up with diesel and continue to drive it as normal. The warranty will not be affected in any way. Happy days!!! I will keep the details of the person that gave me the advice though just in case.

In what way did it sh?t itself?

There should have been just diesel from the tank to the pump unless you started it after filling it with the petrol...

Good luck with it

A few years ago in WA a bloke put diesal in a petrol camper van and when it stopped he drained the tank on the side of the road. Tragedy followed when fumes reached the gas fridge and the whole thing went up in flames with loss of life.

So I guess if you are going to start draining a tank with any amount of petrol in it, try and do it safely like no fridge on and no naked flames or risk of a spark. Dumping fuel on the ground is not safe. Or get some professional help.

after a 36hr shift, 4am, I put around $25-30 petrol in the GQ before realising it.. thought the diesel was cheap (it was back when it was more than petrol)...

Who Flung Dung in the servo was no help with something to drain it into, so I filled the rest of the LRT with Diesel and cruised home pretty much 60-70 all the way rollin when i could.. (only Springvale/FTG rd on monash to langwarrin)coughed and spluttered a few times

Drained it all out, filled with diesel, drained fuel filter, primed and its still going now, over 18mths later.

I wouldnt worry, but thats me.. if your worried drain it and start again, it wont hurt

The cost of draining the tank and refilling (plus towing or whatever other incidentals) would still be cheaper than wrecking a motor.

Best to drain the fuel and keep it for something else.
