I am currently planning a trip to the Kimberleys and would like feedback from recent travellers to the area as to the time taken to travel from Alice Springs along the Gary Junction Rd to Well 33 (Kunawarritji Community) on the CSR and then north along the CSR to Hall's Creek.
A member of our group is on a tight time restraint for this section and I need to know the consensus on how long this section would take.

Thanks in advance.
Tim

We're doing that road next week, and have been told to allow 3 days from Alice to Well 33.

Phil, around 10k past Kintore turnoff there's a Telecom Tower on the right. Great cleared spot for a nights kip.
Don't forget Lens ration truck at the next community.
Also, if you continue past Jupiter well about 50K on the right there's great areas for camping...unless you're in a tent (small rocks).
Water at Jupiter was quite drinkable 12 months ago, but too many camels around for a good camp while we were there.
Have a great trip and let us know how you got on.

Phil, it's great country, especially from Papunya to Kintore...where the fuel supply opens and closes as per Great Desert Treks map.
There were a few minor ruts and a couple of interesting corners around Braeden Hills from memory but nothing severe.
The Telecom towers from the border west are decommissioned BTW.
I can recommend the pies and a shower at Well33, we found it a welcoming sorta place for a community. Spend a few minutes chatting to the people who run it and the locals. Where do you go from Well 33 ?

Alan, I think you were up that way recently - I saw your reports - I think it was you that phoned Willem???
Its our first Pilbara trip - been to the Kimberley, done the Gunbarrell and stuff along the coast, but we've waited a long time to get enough weeks off work to do the Pilbara. We're heading south from 33, then up to Rudall River NP, Carawine gorge, and down to the main part of the Pilbara and maybe the coast for a couple of weeks, and heading back to Adelaide via Nullabor. 3 vehicles - two 79series and one 78series. So if anyone sees us out there with some exploroz stickers on the back, pull over for a chat.

Footy, I think we'll need a pie and a shower (and probably in that order :-)) It will be good to chat to locals.

Cheers

Phil,
One thing I realised from my recent trip was that Rudall River is a place which I must go back to. It's very scenic.

Go in the back way north of Cotton Creek for a more challenging drive if you dare. Signposted that way is "Graphite Valley" which I didn't visit but will now regret not visiting.

Depending on rain, 2 days for the Gary Junction. It was in great nick two weeks ago. Allow 5 days for the northern section of the Canning. That would put you at Wolf creek or Halls Creek for the fifth night.

Cheers.

Tim,

We took two days to get to the turn off for Well 33.

We camped at Redbank Gorge in the West MacDonnell's and the next day travelled via Haasts Bluff road to Papunya and then onto the Gary Junction Road. We stopped for fuel at Papunya, lunch time stop at the first Len Beadell Marker on the GJR and camped about thirty kms west of the border near the Dover Hills.

The next day we stopped at Kiwurrkurra to look at Len Beadell's burnt out ration truck, had lunch at Jupiters Well and got to Kunawarritji Community by late afternoon.

You'll enjoy the trip across there I'm sure.

Best wishes

Viv

meant to add that we headed further west to Marble Bar so can't help with the Canning to Halls Creek section.

G'day TimS,
We took 6 days from Halls Ck to Well 33 and that was not hurrying.
Lots of wildflowers in the top section, will be doing that same thing next year probably.
Don't go past the Gravity Lakes caves, they are very different. (sth of well 45)
Have fun it's a great trip.
