This is not a quiz, I have these 4 old un-named photo's that my Father took with a colour slide camera and I have not the slightest idea where, so if there any older members who might recognise a building etc could you let me know if your 100% sure , looks like late 50s early 60s,

Sorry Doug,
can't help you with them, but I do love the hand signal the guy is doing as he approaches the crosswalk in Town 4. How many people still remember hand signals?
Also....
1. He's actually going to stop for the pedestrians.
2) The pedestrians actually believe he's going to stop - they're already part way across.
Not like it is these days, where pedestrians are treated like targets.
Cheeres,
Russ.

Yep , the old Hand signals eh , and a Ford Prefect at that, My opinion is that was the worst thing councils / Governments did was make right of way for Pedestrians , that gave the pedestrian the idea to force his right of way and really thats not a good idea, Roads were built for Vehicles, the best way is a light controlled crossing, Mt Isa has given back right of way to the motorist in front of Kmart, Pedestrians wander across like cattle and have no regard for anyone else except them selves and were banking up traffic, caused tail-enders etc .

Doug , I can help you with picture number 6.
It is taken looking East down Commercial St. in
Mount Gambier in South Aussie.
The corner
shop Leith & Co. was a mens clothing
shop owned by Leith
Young.
Mr.
Young lived in a magnificent home in Helen St. in the Mt. about where the
main entrance doors to the Lakes Village shopping centre is now. It was a shame to
see all them magnificent homes wrecked in the mid 80's for a K-Mart etc.
The other
shop we can see is Wally Spehrs. Wally was a mens hairdresser and
tobacconist. If I remember right he had 8 chairs going at once in the short back
and sides days. On Saturday mornings you had to get a ticket and get in line for a trim. It was also a meeting point for punters getting their tips for the horses and
dogs before going to the pubs to put their money on races with SP bookies.
Well you have solved one Doug, I will have to think a bit more as I reckon No. 5
was taken in the Lower SE of SA also.
Regards Nick.

Looks like i will have to take your word on that seeing as though you know all about the area, and yes we did visit Mt Gambier in the mid 50s , when did VW Beetles hit the scene, ...they were in Redex trials ,
I will rename the photo. thanks

Not sure Doug but great to see old photos like that.
I thought it was out at Elizabeth at the Holden factory judging by the number of FE/FC Holdens..... lol. Certainly be interesting to have a photo taken today in the same spots and compare.

Yes it does look a bit like
Blackall except the building on the left is too big and the street way in the background rises to sharply, Don't think my Parents got through
Blackall untill early 70s
Thanks anyhow.

I know we went to
places like
Hay, Wagga ,
Wentworth,
Junee,
Junee had a clock in the street , The style of Hotel looks Western NSW, and the building on the left look typical NSW
Post Office
Town 2 would have to be SA, or Qld because of the old B/W Number Plates ,

I was thinking it looked a bit like Moree, but it is looking West I think, when the clock is on the Eastern side of the
intersection in Moree ...
I don't think it is
Bourke as I recall it.

Pic 2 is definitely in Victoria, and 3, 4 & 5 are in NSW.
Parking rear to kerb limits the options broadly to the northern half (but there are exceptions)

SA had black writing on a white background and Vic had white writing on a black background
Is it possible to put number 6 back up so that I can have a look please ?
If you have nothing better to do this site may help narrow down some options...

Hi Doug,
Picture 5 looks like it has some form of council chambers on the right, next door to the Commonwealth Bank.
If you could project the slide onto the screen maybe you could read the name of the council from the front of the building and that would tell you.
Towns 1, 3 & 4 are very familiar but I just can't place them.
Having a
Royal Hotel on a corner in photo 1 really narrows it down! Every country town in Australia has or had a
Royal Hotel!

It's certainly not Barcie. Their main street has its shops predominantly one one side. That sudden rise in the road in the distance does not jell either - Barcie is too flat for that.

young to remember some of the towns so here I had these slides just named Unnamed town 1 and so on , Thought some oldies out there might know , I think I worked out the one from
