Anyone had any troubles with their Raps unit? I had one installed to a '05 Hilux tray under the canopy, and am on my 3'rd unit ! The RAPS was installed by an auto elect. when I had the duel battery done. Both previous units worked for a short time before failing.Could it be the Hilux?Power surges?I have power back to the unit where the two wires enter, but no output from the unit.I'm scared to install the 3'rd unit in case it fails, as Waeco won't supply any more.Any thoughts?Cheers NeilH.

Why do you have a RAPS when you have a dual battery setup?
One of the reasons the RAPS, Thumpers, etc give up the ghost is that they are not a high capacity deep cycle battery. Not sure about the RAPS, but the Waeco Thumper had no means of preventing overcharging.
You'd save a lot of money by just buying a battery box, deep cycle battery and the connections.
Have you asked Waeco? I found out about the charging problem with
mine when I rang them.

My mistake, I thought the RAPS you were describing was the power unit, not the wiring power kit.
Mind you I'd give Waeco a call about it if youd gone thorugh so many.

Wizard1,
You are casting mistruth's with your statement mate.
The "Thumper" is a portable power system which contains multiple smaller AGM batteries inside. It is most definitely, a deep cycle power source, specifically designed for running higher drain devices such as fridges, etc.
As for "overcharging", no battery "prevents" overcharging. It is the function of the charging source, (whatever it may be) that performs this function.

Oh and for general information.
There is no current relationship between "Waeco" and "Thumper".
Blue Apple, (Home of 12 volt) the manufacturer of the Thumper range of portable battery systems, used to supply certain capacity units to Waeco, but that is no longer the case.
The biggest single "problem" encountered with any portable battery system is attempting to run a relatively high current draining device (such as a fridge) off a system with a lower rating in Amp Hours.
It is simply a matter of correct sizing for the function you use it for and the length of time before recharging is necessary.

Sandman,
lighten up. A gentleman at Battery World showed me the batteries that are inside one of those units. After seeing that I now know why my Thumper needs re-charging after a couple of hours use on low amp draw. I've run my Waeco CF50 of it twice and it didn't last the night. Now all its used for an emergency portable source of 12V.
I find them a waste of money, when for the same if not less, you can get a 100 AH ddep cycle in battery box fitted with all the plugs, etc. It lasts longer and has a better charge/discharge lifecyle.
The overcharging issue came up as a bit of "as a matter of fact" by waeco. Advising me what would happen if I didn't use an automatic cut out charger. Nothing was mentioned about this issue in the user instructions.
In my humble opinion they are not good value for money. I can't speak about the Engel units as I only used one for a short time.

Lighten Up!
No mate.
Not when someone rubbishes a product without knowing the facts.
Now, this 'gentleman" at Battery World that opened up the Thumper to show you what's inside.
Did he not advise you that if the unit is "old" it can be repacked.
Did he not advise you that a bunch of smaller batteries connected in series together actually provides a longer life and deeper cycle time than a single battery of the same rating does.
Did he not admit that because he is a Waeco agent, it is in his own interests to promote only Waeco products or batteries that he sells.
For the record, I have no association with the Home of 12 Volt.
I am merely an owner of a product (Thumper) that does exactly what I require and gives me total flexibility and performance. It is one of the best investments in
camping accessories I have made.
So don't believe everything a salesman tells you Wizard.

Wizard,I have been in touch with Waeco many times, they have even contacted my auto elect.,but still can't solve problem.I'm thinking surely I haven't got two faulty units! But can't work out what the problem could be.Have a new dual battery,so can't be voltage drop turning unit off as suggested by Waeco. And yes,it's the dual cig. socket unit, not the battery pack,I'm refeering to. Thanks,NeilH.

Hi neilH,
We've had our 12R-U2 in the Patrol for over two years, connected to the main battery without any problems (touch wood). I haven't heard of anyone having problems with theirs. I'm not in a position to help, but there are plenty of electrical boffins on this site that know what their talking about. Good luck.
Regards, Monkey.
