Safari turbo/ boost compinsator

Hi,
I have installed a safari kit in my 1999 79 series ute. My ute came with a boost compinsator as standard on my 1HZ 4.2 motor.
I dont have an intercooler as yet, but i am running boost maximum at 13 pounds.
Story is, when i instaled the turbo with my 2 1/2 inch exhaust it ran a maximum 9 pounds standard. a week later i went to (Beaudesert Exhaust), and He made me up a 3 inch Mandrel bend exhaust. ( which only took him 17 seconds to make it , UNBELEIVABLE TO WATCH, WITH HIS $300,000 BENDER.) and man, on my way back home to Stanthorpe the Ute went like a rocket. i have instaled the Pira-Gage and before the new exhaust was running at 320 deg on the straights, now running at a cooler 220-250 deg. massive change in temp.So i have added more fuel bit by bit and still no smoke. hardly a puff. i wonder if the boost compensator is controling alot of the fuel it alows? if anyone can help? I will get it tuned soon and have the valves done.
I havent managed to get the exhaust higher then 420 deg up the cunninghams gap with full load.
Regards Chris

I installed the Turbo a couple weeks ago, The safari kit was second hand from Victoria, which cost me $750.00 includes the exhaust manifold, Garret turbo that came off a 100 series landcruiser with intercooler. all pipes and bits, i had to get the gaskets and the braded oil line and gauges.
so all up for the kit complete cost me $1178.00 plus gauges which were expensive i must say. Pyro gauge was $262.55 but worth it!
Exhaust made the huge difference.

Hi Chris,

If your ute was not a factory turbo diesel then its unlikely you have a boost compensator. They all have a altitude compensator, maybe its that?

The 1hz is a much more enjoyable beast with a turbo. Put one on my 100 series GXL about 10000kms ago. Doesn't blow smoke that you can see from the drivers seat either. As long as you are not exceeding 520c you can turn your fuel up a bit more. Mine will go up to about 700c (pre-turbo) up a long steep hill well loaded.

Have Fun,

Mitch

Hi Mitch,
Well maybe it is a Altitude compensator. but i know this much, i have upped the fuel to maximum, and still no smoke from exhaust.
Maybe i should take a piccy of the unit, if u know what they look like.
I know a guy told me, that i have a boost compinsator, and asked me if the ute had a turbo before. so i called the previous owner about that and he said as far as he knows it never had a turbo in it.

Hi Chris,

Mine is a standard and a mate of mine has a factory turbo 80 series. I can take a couple of pics if you want.

You may have a worn fuel pump if its wound up to max and its only getting to low 400's temp wise. Mine still has further adjustment and it is possible to run over 700c (pre-turbo). There is roughly a 200c drop across the turbo.

regards,

Mitch

Hi Mitch,
Yes i would love to see the pics if u could.
I have noticed as i up the fuel, i am getting increased power each time. but no excessive smoke. Im just wondering if that compensator is stopping over fueling, and allowing me to fuel up without it over fueling.
Cheers
Chris

Mitch,

more air flow thru the motor with out additional fuelling will lower EGT. The compensator usually reduces fuelling as boost decreases to avoid over fuelling. 1HZ did not come ex factory with compensators fitted in Oz.

More air into the motor permits you to burn more fuel and maintain accepable exhaust temps, and burns more of the fuel in the combustion chamber rather than partially in the exhaust manifold.

However excessive combustion temps have been known to cause problems on 1HZ engines. If you fuel it up until you see black exhaust smoke you are very likely to cause some engine problems. The 1HZ is an IDI engine, unlike the 1HD engines which are direct injected (DI) engines.

Turning up the fuel is best accompied by a good pyrometer to avoid execessive temperatures. Ideally you would be looking for an / pyrometer with alarmso that you can be alerted when you exceed safe temperatures, as you will often be concerntrating on were you are driving, rather than instrumentation.

Mine is conservativelly set, and lets me know when the pre-set temperature has been exceeded with a moderate buzz until its back to a safer temperature.

Hi Chris,

Will get the photos as soon as I can. Going away thursday for the weekend, but I'll try to do it before then.

prado_95 has valid points, however you are in no danger of damaging anything at the temps you are getting at present. if you can install a pre-turbo pyro you will have a much more accurate idea of EGT.

The type of guage he refers to is also what I use and are available out of the US at a much cheaper rate that is available here, even with shipping. This is where I got mine from and about 6 others for friends also with turbo diesels. Just source you thermocouple and lead locally.

Not sure if link will work but you should be able to cut and paste it.

Mitch

Hi prado,
Yeah i do have a pryo gauge, like i said i cant get it above 420 deg c, i have tried the longest hills and with a trailer loaded to about 750 kg.
i even had my foot on the brakes to put on more load.
