Just a observation today, but was parked behind a 4wd with camper trailer and not mentioning makes but the axle on this trailer was starting to resemble a banana!!.
Have not heard of any dramas with camper trailer axles, but after looking at this thing, i was just wondering if there might be a few issues with some models as they get a bit of age behind them?.
Cheers Axle.

G'day Brew,
David's was a Sugarglider swing arm, so slightly different from the "bowed like a banana" syndrome, but nevertheless, still a timely reminder that axles can take a beating.
Cheers

Do you think it may have been overloaded for the size of axle or just as you suggested a bit of age taking it's toll. Our C/T axle has a rating of 1300kg I think and due to having to get a shackle replaced thought I might go for a heavier axle at the same time.
Cheers

Not sure about the over loading aspect mate, bit hard to say just looking at it, But it has been a issue with some boat trailers, caravans,. etc over the years, Why don't they the (manufactures) just build to a maxiunm instead of a minimum.

Because we stupidly buy to a minimum price and get what we pay for.
Not too many people at caravan &
camping shows crawl under the CT or caravan they are buying - rep thought I was mad when I did my little wriggle under. At least I knew what I was getting!

I'm hoping that having independent eye to eye leaf, plus a shock absorber works for my offroad trailer :)
!MPG:6!

It is a custom made one from Cootacampers, check my rig profile for more info on it.
The
suspension is the same one that he uses on his single axled campers.

G'day Kev, I have a Dual Axle Coota Camper, and very happy with it.
I think I saw your one being built. I was over there late last year getting a service done on our camper (
water tank re-welded).
Top looking unit.

Tony,
I picked my trailer up around the end of November.
I heard a couple of months ago that the dog they had there died, one of the workers reversed over him in the F250. He was a good looking dog as
well.
Cheers Kev

Hi mike, You made the statement mentioning " off road campers and caravans:" being picked up, with snapped axles, if that's the case it another issue to bug all happy campers!

Have seen some "off road" trailers with the same axles, springs, hangers and everything else underneath as the same company's "on road" models. The only difference being one can put 6 stud landcruiser
wheels and the other 5 stud Commodore
wheels. In my books that doesn't make for an off road trailer.
This will suit most buyers who rarely even take their fourby off bitumen let alone go bush with the trailer. But it does create problems if they decide to go on a bush trip with their "off road" CT.
I researched, studied and got my Cameron CT with 2 tonne axle and 1750 kg springs with hangers to match.

A lot of beam axle trailers nget bent when driving through deep stuff, rocks etc and getting hooked up.
In my case I have an independant
suspension and my axle broke away from the square flange that bolts onto the
suspension. This was due to a faulty weld that had no penetration. The weld looked good from the outside but was not holding on by much. Once welded correctly I don't think mit will be a problem but the other side will get a good check when it comes back

I find it strange when people (companies) skimp on the axel streangths. Ithink the one I put under the boat was 2.5 tonne, not much different in price to the lighter duty ones ($20-30 from memory)
So far very few problems since the modifications 2 years ago, including trips to
Kalumburu and Cape dommett. Not bad considering not many people (are game/stupid enough to) tow boats this big to these
places. (See rig photo's)

Max _
Sydney hit the nail on the ehad with his comment ..... "Because we stupidly buy to a minimum price and get what we pay for."
Every second post here is related to ..... how cheap can I get it for!
You can't blame manufacturers for giving you what you want, I often see posts criticising the high prices of some camper trailers,
well, you get what you pay for!
