I just returned from a great trip to Mt Augustus/Karijini/
Millstream. On the way back a couple of us called into
Onslow, having met someone who said that when there they had a great
campsite right on
the beach. When we got there we found two crowded caravan parks, an unimpressive 'beach' with muddy/sandy
water and the '
bush camp' just out of town had a 'no
camping'
sign.
Onslow itself is probably an OK place if you live there but neither of us could see any reason why anyone would want to visit. The main attracttions seemed to be
termite mounds and a solar salt farm.
On the way back to the main road (70+ k) we passed five more caravans heading for the town.
I'm not intending to be rude to
Onslow or it's residents, but can someone tell me what we missed - why do so many people visit? It was the school holidays but there was nothing there for kids and I don't recall seeing any.

Hi Greydemon,
Bit O/T as I have never been to
Onslow, I am looking at doing the Kingsford smith mail run in September and was wondering what the road was like(Mt Augustus)
Thanks for your time

Hi John,
Pretty good, you shouldn't have any problems. There is one lumpy bit between the two Karijini campsites but the grader was in the area when we were there so it should be OK now - it wasn't too bad anyway and only about 5 kms. Matt above has a string further down where I posted more information.

John,
As Nick said.
While camped at the Eco
camping area in Karajini a couple of weeks ago a large Winnebago towing a Grande Vitara pulled in.

I tried to like the place but while talking to ma and pa on the public phone some of the "local" kids started a fire under the
shop verandas I will tell anyone that cares to listen just go elsewhere

There last year.
Onslow was "OK". Old
Onslow was interesting. Fishing obviously a big thing (altho we caught zilch) as lots around us were bagging heaps from boats mainly. A neighbour droped in a bag of fillets for us so we were wrapped.
Agree on the CP though. Crowded and average. The camps along the river looked OK to us and had plenty of spaces. While
the beach migh be unattractive to swim we certainly enjoyed the peaceful walks. And our best sunset photo after a trip lasting 10 weeks is easily the one taken from the CP at
Onslow.

Hello,
The town is mainly a getaway for the winter cold . The pople of the town were friendly and helpful, we was told to visit a few
places OLD
ONSLOW where there is a great
camping area and a swimming area an
oasis apparantly ( we decided to stay in town and try the fishing instead) we heard of a great company called Scubaroo dive, these people take you out diving , the guy running it Geoff ? is world class teacher and knows his stuff, we met some people who participated and were overwhelmed by the service and knowledge this guy had of the area.
Swimming in the
water up there not for this duck lolololol

Good base for exploring the offshore islands for those with decent boats.....can be awesome fishing around the offshore reefs and islands such as Airlie,
Thevenard, Serrurier etc unless its blowing a gale which can be quite often!
Nice little seafood restaurant, cant remember it's name though.
Probably not worth the side trip though, unless your a serious fisherman with boat.

Thanks everyone, I wan't really having a go at
Onslow -
well, maybe a bit - I really wondered if I had missed something!
What I know I did miss was everything down the coast from there, including
Ningaloo. My last travelling companion went his own way after
Onslow and as the weather forcast was rain and wind all along the coast I chickened out and ran for home - even being a wimp and staying in a Motel in Geralton rather than have to put up and pack up a camper trailer in the rain by myself!!
My excuse is that I will enjoy it more next trip when my wife and at least one offspring will be with me.

One of the advantages of going in there is you can have a few days rest and get fuel at around 15 cents/litre cheaper than Nanutarra Roadhouse.

I'll check my notes when I get home from work but I would be surprised if you are right.
Onslow certainly had the most expensive LPG I saw anywhere on my trip (103.2 cents per litre) and I chose to run on petrol rather than pay that price. I believe that the guy travelling with me said the unleaded was around 1.86 per litre which wasn't very cheap.
Plus of course there is the 70+kms each way to get there!
