Hi all, doing a 3 week trip to the Red Centre from
Sydney to see some of the
places we missed seeing last time.
The Painted Desert is one of them. I have read the Trek Notes on Exploroz but have a few more questions. I know it is on the road east from
Cadney Park, but is it closer to one end of that road or the other or closer to the middle. Have heard about
camping at
Arckaringa Station and also at the Copper Hills...any preferences?
Gary.

Copper Hills was closed a few months back - might still be - the really painted part of
the desert might be a little closer to Cadney, but there's not a lot in it - the whole area is
well worth the trip through there.

I stayed at
Arckaringa two weeks ago, very close to the PD lookouts and walks but the septic was playing up rendering the showers and
toilets all but useless. Copper Hills is still closed so I'm led to believe.

Arckaringa is the place to
camp.

Went through about this time last year.
Closer to Cadney but road from
Arckaringa to Candey rougher than from
Oodnadatta.
Arckaringa was fantastic. Stayed 2 nights. Peaceful, plenty of room, other travellers great company. We will return---one day.

As I posted earlier, we stayed there two weeks ago. The
toilets and showers were out of commission, there was a drilling team staying in the cabins who left for work at 5-00am (not a problem if you want to see the PD at dawn). Personally I would prefer to
bush camp at Gooriakana
Creek (sp) after my experience.

84 km from
Cadney Park, is the closest place, not too sure about
Oodnadatta, but maybe in the vacinity of 145 km, from Mt Battersbt
lookout, and the Moon Plane.
Enjoy ,, really beautiful
We stayed a couple of days, and I got to go with the Manager on a watertrough run and coming off a farm, myself, I was in awe.
Cheers Mate
