Little cool some nights lately... Anyone got good experience with heating systems? i'm thinking 12 v heaters of some type, no doubt a heavy power drain, but.
Alternatives. Not vetry keen on flames obviously. Had a great propane heater in US on a slide on unit, but unlikely to be simple, cheap effective etc? over to forumites

We used a Coleman catalytic heater with the fan in it when we were in the deep dark south about 20 days ago (Warraweena). This heater worked so well we had a hard time trying to get Australia's version of Grizzly Adams (Willem) out of our camper trailer. You can run the heater off the small gas canisters or buy the ext hose and and use any gas bottle. If you really want to win points with the misses fit an inverter and run a single electric blanket, it will be like you never left home.

We used out Cobb for a heater last time we camped. Just put the heat beats in out in the open burnt down and then put in the annex area of the camper under the table. When beads died down put a few more in small time outside and then bring back in. We found it kept the 6 of us warm playing poker around the dinner table after tea. When we had both Cobbs going it became too warm and we had to strip off some layers. Hot water bottle in bed worked a treat to allow you to get into a warm bed to go to sleep.
Cheers
Robyn

Hi Nick R
but at least I can still use my Cobb for cooking as well. I even use it at home instead of the bigger webber for roasts unless I am having guests to cater for as well. Use ithe Cobb many nights of the week camping on an unpowered site at xmas for meals. When we sit for 4 weeks on the unpowered site I cant even take my Engle or Everkool for the frig because of the battery usage so had to get a Chescold 3 way for these times. Better half certainly wouldnt allow me the 12 volt electric blanket, so in winter the hot water bottles come into their own for the bed and the Cobb for the night hours around the table with card games or reading.

We found the hot water bottles were good at warraweena, we kept re-using the water so we didn't use much. we now have the 12v blanket, next i need to find a timer to switch it on and off through the night so as to keep us (her) warm and not use too much power.

Nigel,
12 v heating is very unlikely - unless you have unlimited battery capacity. Think the watts required would challenge even a reasonably sized generator.
I have once resorted to placing a gas light under the table one freezing night in the Flinders Ranges but gave up and went to bed! Now use a small propane heater on small gas bottle (cheap at camping stores), but as you say not a good idea inside camper. Suggest go to the sack and read a book ...or something!

Wimps maybe stupid nah.
You would be surprised how may people came and checked out our setup on the orders of their better halfs after a few chilly nights. Some are well known on the forum and not quite as tough as they make out.....they know how they are?

No1 from memory I think the wimps were South Australian and Victorian Toyota drivers you know the ones that kept tripping over their skirts getting in and out of their cars. No wonder the toilet was getting smelly at Warraweena all those Mexicans squatting instead of using a tree.....hahahahahah.

I'm with you Brew,
I locked my camper tool box and put things away but some were not as lucky, how do you lock up a flag. You would think with the local wallapers (cops) so close that would be a deterant that is unless the new them or thought they were better than everyone else...........the mind boggles

Wife has started going through that change of life.
About 2am, she goes into heater mode.
Even on the coldest night around the 0s covers are being peeled back.

No, she is not available for a loan. :o)

Only draw back is that she goes to bed with very cold feet, and I am the closest source of warmth. Fair swap I reckon.

Correct ! There are two things that you never lend.
1. Your Wife.
2. Your chainsaw.

They both come back in
the same condition -- ie worn out. Regards G.T.

If it gets that cold you can put one of those 12V work lights in your sleeping bag with you. The bulb type, not fluoro or LED. Electric bulbs have some 2% light generation efficiency, the other 98% of energy is transformed in heat. You can even customise by using 5W or 21W bulbs - based on battery capacity etc. It's the cheap version of an electric blanket I guess...

Often when we're sitting around a camp fire on a freezing night I think someone needs to invent a device which can capture some of that energy and heat the CT. Something you can through on the fire which is in some way connected to a decvice in the tent. No idea how to do it but it would be great. As would a way to use the energy of the fire to charge batteries. Sorry, no help to you Nigel.

A friend's scout troop had a 44 gallon drum with a fan mounted in a hole in the top and flexible heater ducts fixed through holes in the sides. Drum went on the fire (or a smaller second fire) ducts went into tents and a 12 battery powered the fan. Apparently worked very well but was bulky. I've often thought about making a smaller version but at the end of the day haven't because once we go into the camper it's into sleeping bags and it doesn't matter how cold the air is.

Longreach, are you thinking like a steam engine driving an alternator - haha, that would be handy! 2 hours of steam engine to charge the batteries for the night.
