I've read some of the old comments on Kipor generators and wonder if anyone has recent experience. We are looking at a 2.6 to run the air con etc. Comments please and also price and best place to buy

Beema, I have experience with the 1KVA. Bought one a bit over 2 years ago as it was more than 40% cheaper than the Honda. Worked well, but broke down after about 15 months (12 month warranty) Local Kipor repair agent quoted me $700 to repair it. Just $100 less tha I paid for it. After a bit of discussion Primus (importer) repaired it free, which was good of them.
Recently while camped fishing up in the Gulf, it broke down again.

On our return home, we bit the bullit and bought a Honda. Since the Kipor purchase, competition has forced their prices down quite a bit. Although the Kipor is still a lot cheaper, the Honda reputation and the 4 year warranty convinced me that it was worth paying a bit more.

That's my experience. The Kipor was a great generator when it worked. But two major break downs in two years was too much. We camp in pretty remote areas with no service centre nearby, so reliability is important to us.

Beema,

There is a post on the caravan forum 15/07/2007. Talking about legal action taken by Honda against Kipor. Cannot advise as to its authenticity but it would pay to browse and see for yourself.

Mate I work for a camping shop that sells them and I have heard quite a few bad reports about them. A reasonable percentage of them come back for warranty repairs within the first 12 months. For not a great deal extra money you could get an engel. They use the same motor and other inside bits as the honda and from what I hear, have a pretty good reputation.

The Engel doesn't have an ecothrottle- noisy as hell as it is always revving.

Beema
My story is almost an exact copy of NormC's experience, broke down twice outside warranty period, Powerlite in Sydney done the right thing by me but I sold it - after repair on ebay and I am happy with my Honda.

If you can afford a Honda or Yamaha buy it but my Kipor's are still going. I have a 3000i series 2.6KVA and it is very quiet and does it's job, I don't use it more than 2 weeks a year and only had it 2 years. I bought mine via some crowd on Ebay, can't remember who. Approx $1299 from memory.

The general build quality is not as good, no doubt but if you respect a Kipor I don't see why it shouldn't last. The Honda goes without saying, they are almost bulletproof like most Honda stuff. For $1200 odd dollars you can't get better value than the Kipor.
