Plenty of snow up at Mt Skene last weekend. Over a foot of snow.
Road was open from Jamieson end only. Nothing at Matlock.

Is there anyone out there who was familiar with Mt Skene prior to it being a 4WD mecca. Say prior to the hut being built in about 1991. I used to go up there with the old man in the early 70's and you would be lucky to see another person in days. My wife and I used stay in the car at the snow line and then ski to the summit in the 80's and you wouldn't see another person, let alone a vehicle. During the summer we used to camp on the point that now has the hut on it. In about early summer 1991 I was heading up there in a Series 3 Landrover Ute with my wife and 18month old daughter. We were running a bit late and were flagged down by a Euopean couple with a Holden Gemini stuck on a log or something. After pulling them out we got to the summit close to dusk on a warm night with a huge moon and as we were driving along, were swamped by Bogong moth's. I remember putting my hand out the window and bringing in a whole hand full. It's the only time I've seen them in this sort of quantity. When we finally arrived at our normal camp site we came upon the newly built hut and realised that it was possibly the end of an era, as it has turned out to be. I went up there with my son on a long weekend probably in about 97 and there were a dozen 4wd's at the hut.
It became apparent speaking to them that the hut was on a map and it had became a destination.
I remember staying in a hut on a wild night in about 1973 or 4 somewhere near the summit. I haven't located that hut since and presume it was burnt down or something similar. Anyone shed light on this. Cheers Paps.

Did much same thing here Paps - used to use it to participate in VHF radio competitions , was also small more modern hut built near the old one which was also used as fire watch tower.

It was burnt and gutted but still used a bit when I saw it last in seventies , can't remember date.

Would have pictures to , but not digital of course.

Place has largely been destroyed by Parks etc operations , frogs hollow doesn't exist and even the picnic table on north end had no view when there last year
as trees grown up around it.

Robin, it is a bit of a shame the way it's deteriorated in many ways. Even the little destination compass (is that the north side your talking about?) has fallen to pieces. Was there actually a fire tower or was it down on the point where the "Jameison Ski Club" hut is? Before that was biult, there were oil tins and a few other bits and pieces kicking around that indicated something there once. I'm really streching the memory back to the seventies now but In my adult life I always thought ithey had to do with logging. Paps.

Would like to reply to Paps re memories of Mt Skene in the early days but cannot select post follow-up icon without getting an error message. Any clues on how to reply. I used to visit a few times each year in late 60's and early 70's, when a 4wd track was the only access to the fire tower.

Jolo, I got your reply on Mt Skene so reminisce away. I had forgotten about the fire tower and now I think the hut I stayed in in the early seventies was near there. Was it up where the trigg is now? We also used to spend a bit of time at Wren's flat and Mitchell's homestead as well when they were less used than today. I consider myself lucky to have experienced it the way it once was. Paps.

Thanks for pictures Truckster , they bring back memories but no that is not the Mt Skene fire tower hut.

The actual Hut had two stories as well as was made of wood planks but top story had 360 degree views for fire spotting and was more creamy color.

If you call up forrest explorer online from dse website you can zoom in to its maps and it was at approx 55 446072,5854111

On current maps its shown as high point of 1468m on the Australian walking track, which used to be a 4wd track.

I think you were lucky to experience as it was.

The Dse and other government groups have destroyed so much
of our recent heritage that I think one day people will look back
at our times in sadness.

(I have to drag out a photo )

I have an old photo of Mt Skene fire tower in 1967 or 1968 but need some instructions on how to insert scanned JPEG image. Old hut is as described by Robin Miller and I think it was right at the top of My Skene at the trig point. A 4WD track was the only access for the last 3-4km before the Jamieson road was put through in early seventies. I did this trip by car in 1970 or 71 not long after it opened (was before kids arrived in late 1971). I did at least 1 trip per year with a couple of mates in an old landrover from 1966 to 1970 and would stay at the hut - usually over the March or QB long weekend. There was a visitors book in the hut and there would not be many entries between our return visits - would be lucky to have to turn a page. We would not see any other people or traffic on the tracks even on a long weekend. There was another hut on the formed road before the 4WD track started - I think near the intersection to another road (need to look at maps to jog memory regarding names). Only problem with the Mt Skene hut was the fireplace was smokey and as we usually went in cold weather we had to put up with a smokey room. There was a ladder in the middle of the hut up to the glassed fire spotting platform. Great view in good weather. Hut was still there when I did the car trip with my wife in 70 or 71 but I think it was just off the Jamieson road but accessable by car. Hope to get to include photo and will give some more info another day.
Regards

Hi John

The hut was on the lower south summit of the ridge couple of km south of trig point as per reference above.
Had a quick look thru my slides and have some showing it up to at least 1974 in snow.

With all of us who went up there then , wonder if we ran into each other at the time.

The slides that truckster put up could even be of it after its first burn down and re-build in seventies, as background is similar to my slides.

What great memories John. It's a bygone era and that sort of experience is almost impossible these days. Robin has jogged my memory now and there is a spot were you start to drop off the top going south were a track goes of to the left. It's probably the start of the Barkly River Jeep track. This goes up to a little flat area were there is (or was) ruins that will most likely be the hut. Bricks and a concrete slab from memory and pretty well a 360 degree view. It would be right on the edge of the eastern drop off the mountain. Robin, aren't Trucksters slides of the Jamieson Ski Club Hut on the north/east spur? Paps.

I have just found out how to insert a photo - hope it turns out OK. This would have been 1967 or 1968. Snowed hard all night and we only just managed to get off the mountainthe next day.

Thats the one Jolo, good job , still haven't got my 2 1/4 square slides thru a scanner.
My slide is same from other angle taken about 73 and cream colour paintwork is a lot more beaten up.

That is fantastic John. Now that brings back memories. If I'm right I stayed a night in that hut in 1974/5 with my father, brother and a series 3 Landy.
About the time your talking about, around 1966/7 my family went to Mt Wellington and Lake Tarli Karng with a neighbour who had a short Landy. He and his father were involved with the LROC and mechanical repairs on Landy's in those days. His name was Max Loring. Did you know him? Paps.

Glad the photo worked but the quality is not that good. Remember cameras were only just invented back then. My friend Rick (striped shirt) was the Landy owner and I am the skinny guy. The 3rd friend Doug took the photo. We enjoyed the MT Skene area because it was less populated but also did lots of trips on the Tamboritha & Howitt Rds (Howitt hut & Guys hut) etc. Never did manage to get to Lake Tarli Karng. There were more people in this area but would still have a weekend without seeing others. Even the airstrip on Snowy Plains was there at that time. I was married late 1970 so 4W driving with mates came to an end about then. Still manged a few trips to the area in the 70's & 80's with my family but only had a conventional car. Always made it adventurous having to use chains when it snowed. We go camping with a large family group on Valencia Creek (Moroka Rd)every Easter a few km before Paddy Lees crossing. Our farmer friend has taken us up to the Pinnacles & Horseyard Flat etc. I have just made it to semi-retirement and bought a new Pathfinder 4WD and was planning to revisit the area but the recent fires have delayed that until things get green again (fires got to Paddy Lees). The area around Licola/Dargo etc has a special attraction for me and hope to be able to do trips soon. However, I think I will find things a lot different and much more populated than what used to be.

John, I spent 4 days up there in November last year the week before Melbourne cup weekend and had the place to myself. Walked into Moroka Gorge and up Mt Wellington. If yourv'e got the opportunity to go midweek it is deserted. I also spend a bit of time on the Dargo High Plains. There is some great little camp spots off the main rd at the north end and a good little drive on the Mt Blue Rag Range. Once again mid week and it's all yours. Paps.
