Can you recharge direct from any normal propane 9kg cyl?

I thought they had a propane butane mix?

Anyone whos bought one, wheres best place to buy from in USA, or any oz importers?

Thanks

Ron

Hi Ron,

I have an adapter to fit my 2kg bottle and run the cat from this bottle, I have'nt noticed any probs doing it this way in the time I have had it setup like this. My 2kg runs the cat for 3 big nights in our van, keeping us toasty warm when we do. Gas shops would definately have couplers to adapt to 9kg bottles.

Cheers, trevor.

Note - Coleman have removed all reference to these heaters being suitable for use in caravans from their advertising. There was discussion in the Caravanforum regarding their suitability in caravans. It was argued that they are not permitted because their combustion products are not flued to the outside air as required by our gas regulations. Coleman were approached regarding this and their advertising was subsequently changed.

Ron,

I doubt that you will purchase one in Australia.
The Coleman canisters say "Do not refill" here.

Yes you do fill from your 9kg bottle, purchase the MacCoupler
from the USA.

Regards,
Jim

Thanks,

sussed out one on ebay.

it is total propane. Was mixing up with another heater I looked at, a small portable gas unit which uses the companion cylinders.

Glad I went Coleman again, and despite only 3000btu which equates to 0.88kw, it puts out more heat than the 1.7kw gas unit in a side by side test in shop, a hand near each, coleman hand was getting hotter, but only after being on a few minutes, but still very good.
Also being able to refill = top dog!!

Thanks again

Ron

Why refill ?? just use it straight off a 2, 4 or 9KG bottle !!! So easy, and no jerking around trying to refill canisters !!!

Refill because I use dual fuel appliances and dont carry a 9kg, so to refill a couple now n then b4 each trip is easy for me, and convenient. Also if I run out (unlikely) I will just buy another refill.

Gronk , why refill you ask . ,, because the little 800gram Coleman cylinders are so handy yet can work out rather expensive at $6.90 ea so refilling from a 9kg gives 11 refills at around $1.40 a time , as for jerking around refilling them , its a lot easier doing it youself than waiting for the snotty nosed junior to refill your 2-4-9 kg bottle at the servo.

Ron,

The MacCoupler is an adaptor used to fill a Coleman "disposable" bottle from a LPG Cylinder with a POL type fitting. (e.g. the fitting that is standard on a 9kg or 4kg bottles. If you aren't going to use the small Coleman bottle then there is no practical use in obtaining the MacCoupler.

What it sounds like you need is an adaptor hose that connects Coleman equipment (heater, stove, etc.) to a larger gas bottle.

These adaptor hoses are available from Coleman and probably larger camping stores such as Rays Outdoors. The hoses actually terminate in a 3/8" gas fitting and if you wish to connect to a POL fitting, 3/8" to POL adaptors are also available from the same places.

Sandman,

I am using the small coleman cartridges, and I do plan to refill them.

The heater I have is the one that the cartridge forms its frame.

I dont carry a 9kg, and have no desire to I'm on dual fuel all round with exception of this heater, so to refill a couple of bottles b4 each winter trip is easy and convenient.

Hope this makes sense

Ron,

OK, from your reply you need a MacCoupler then.

I also have the MacCoupler but am looking to "experiment" a bit.

Due to the "Lifespan" of the canister between replacement with a full canister, I am looking to use the Coleman adapter hose (available as an accessory for the Coleman stove) to connect the heater to a larger gas cylinder.

The only problem to overcome is to make up an alternative supporting bracket because (as you have pointed out) the coleman canister is an integral part of the BlackCat's support frame.
