Rims for 100's cruiser - IFS

Hi people,
with all the help and advice that I have received from people, I have fitted out the truck with a heap of goodies and now the truck is ready for the bush.

I have fitted some Cooper ST-T's to the alloy rims that I had, and are now finding the economy and power going out the window.

I am therefore in search of some new rims that I will fit A/T or even road tyres to for day to day running around and leave the muddies for when I'm going away.

I have tried a couple of places and bidding on ebay for a set (5 off), but I wanted to know if anyone here could either recommend someone or knew of someone with a set they don't need. I am in the Hills area of Sydney.

Good day Taps,

Can you please clarify, you say your economy and power is going out the door, what size have you gone up to, to make such a difference? Is you rvehicle auto/manual petrol/diesel. Exactly what is the difference in consumption and are you allowing for the difference in tyre size in your calculations. Have you also changed the ride height/weight/roof rack all things that will compound the problem. Just curious as I have made many changes and yes there is a slight increase in consumption but 1 or 2% isn't to bad a trade-off.

OK....
The car is an auto V8. first put a 2" lift (4wd megastores drop diff kit), I also currently still have the basket on the roof from the last trip, which has an awning attached to it. I've got drawers in the back (45kgs), an 80L waeco (34kgs), and the tyres currently run are 285/75R16.

The diameter of the cooper is 841mm as opposed to the 791mm factory fitted grandtreks (which only lasted about 30K), so by my calculations there is a 6% increase in travel ( might be doing the calcs incorrectly)

My old fuel economy was 650 kms per 110-115 ltrs (17L/100), (oh yeah, i have the petrol motor) whereas now i am getting about 550 kms from the same amount of fuel (20L/100).

The difference in circumference of tyres is 157mm which equates to 86m over the 550kms which is bugger all.

I may be doing the calcs wrong ???? i dunno.

By my calcs, i am spending a further $900 per year in fuel. If can get a set of rims for say $250+tyres @ $145-160 ea, I'm still ahead, and not wearing down the $1600 coopers around town.

That was my thought ????

As you say the difference in tyre size is reflected in the larger diameter, you say about 6% and that sounds about right. In you fuel calcs you need to allow for this, hence the 550 k's on the odo are really 550 + 6%= 583k's travelled or say 18.86lt per 100 k. Now as others have mentioned were you getting thoses figures with all the accessories as 17% seems very good and anyhow you are really only using 1.86% extra based on the figures you have given. Keep in mind that the taller tyres take some extra effort as the taller the vehicle the less fuel efficient due to many factors ie aerodynamics. What Coopers are you running at $1600 again very exe and I would guess that was for all five. I would look at running two sets if your car is your daily drive and the off road set is a dedicated tyre not an a/t.

I am running the 285/75R16 ST-T's. Probaby more aggresive than I'll ever need for the near future, but they didn't have the ST-C's in stock and I didn't like the "look" of the basic ST's (all terrain).
Where i am going in september is shale and I was advised that the ST won't handle the shale too well....but that's another story.

I have driven to QLD with the loaded basket on top, and heaps in the back, which would weigh more than what I am carrying now, and my fuel economy was the same as previously mentioned, ie around 17L/100.

The tank i am running around on now, is almost all gone and my odo reads 510kms. I 'estimate', that I've used about 110lts. This included some highway driving yesterday (central coast). allowing for the 6% increase thats about 540kms or 20.37L/100.

it's still the same.

I'm just wondering how much does your economy need to change to justify the expense of a second set of rims and tyres?

I guess if you're doing 20000kms/year, and around 2L/100kms, you might save $400 a year... but 2L/100kms just on tyres seems like a pretty big change.

Also looking at that, you'd save about $1000 for 50000kms, by which stage you'd be due for new tyres, which cost what.... about $1000?

Picked some up from a large tyre mob on Canterbury road in Sydney. $50 a pop from memory, was some years ago. Toyota were quoting $80.

I am looking at about 3-4L/100. Doesn't sound like much, but it adds up quickly, not only in money but in time filling that tanks every weeks opposed to every 10-14 days.

At $1.25 per litre (a conservative figure), it costs an extra $900 ish per year. That's almost a good winch.

Look in the Trading Post, the pricing is better than Ebay and be patient.
IFS rims are quite common and shouldn't be all that expensive.

This is a current ad from the Newcastle Local Trader, (Sort of like the Trading Post for Newcastle and Hunter Valley only)

They are off an IFS wagon. One of the tyres would do as a get home spare around town. The others are throw aways.
I looked at them last Saturday but they weren't what I needed.

Be patient and you'll pick up IFS rims with tyres at some quite reasonable prices.
Rims for a rigid front end, that's a diffrent story!

Unless you put on hugh diameter tyres, I would be looking at the amount of weight you aded as the culprit or you have another problem.

What size STT's did you fit?

I went from 275X70X16 A/T's to BFG 285X75X16 muds and fuel consumtion deteriorated marginally.

If you have increased tyre size and you are using the odometer to calculate fuel consumption you will need to apply an adjusting factor to normalise the comparison. Mine adjustment was around 10% as the GPS (100kph) was roughly 5% under the speedo (95kph) and went to 5% over (105kph) with the larger tyre size.

I've also got two sets of rims as I kept the steels when I put on the alloys. I don't use the steels with the AT's but I'm hanging onto them for a CT at some stage. ;)
