High people Im having trouble getting a simple gas light to operate. I have attached a new mantal, I ignited it so it burnt to the top. I can hear the gas flowing through and I insert an ignited match but nothing happens. The lantern is attached to about a meter long pole that enables you to stand the lanten on and simultaneously run a gas stove from. I dismatled this unit thinking maybe I would have better luck running the lantern directly from the gas cylinder, but to no avail. Its pretty frustrating as I have a really great coleman lantern that runs brilliantly on shellite but Im not getting any luck with this gas lantern. Any tips advise most welcome. Hoo roo James

Jammies,
I know only too
well how bad it is to be ignored when one seeks advice on a "simple" problem.
Mate, we haven't used mantles in yonks, but if you have burnt and expanded the mantle, and gas is flowing, then I can't help.
Did your little weenie expand as it burned?
You have gas flow, so where is it burning?
Regards,
Jeff

James, the only thing I can suggest is to dismantle to tubes etc and make sure there is no restriction. I've had the same happen to
mine twice over the last twenty tears and both times there has been a spider web inside restricting the gas. You can still hear the gas coming through the jet. Paps.

Sounds like you have a blocked jet in the lantern. Not enough gas coming through to ignite.
Burning the lantern should be done with the gas but sounds like all you did was burn the mantle with a match?

I'll second that. Sounds like a partially blocked main jet.
Mine was doing exactly the same thing, cleaned the jet and it's all better. Prob best to clean out all of the fittings while you're at it. Keep in mind that particles smaller than most people can see can be enough to block these lights up a bit!
Cheers

I've had this too, and it can be a bugger to fix...

I use these gas lights regularly, but
mine are Primus lamps. I initially burn the mantle with the gas lighter, but a match is also OK. I have the extension tube. I've had no problems.

I would (almost) put money on a spider having made its home in the tube. You may be able to get a pipecleaner into it to clean it. This happens in three-way gas fridges also.

Hi James,
Does the gas bottle run the STOVE from the bottle?
If you are able to, hook up a stove to the top connection on the pole and give that a go.
stove works off bottle, not off pole, pole prob.
stove works off bottle and pole, light prob.
nothing works anywhere,gas/bottle prob.

The pole should have a 3/8" male fitting one end and a 3/8" female fitting the other.
You should be able to screw the lantern direct to the gas bottle, thus eliminating the extension pole.
This will tell you if it's most likely to be the pole, or the lantern.
