I stumbled across an interesting fact today. (Something that Telstra doesn’t promote)
You can take a NextG sim card and insert it into a GSM phone and use it to make and receive calls, etc. via the GSM network.
Why would you do this, you ask?
Well, one problem I have (had) is the need to have two phone Accounts.
A NextG Account for the phone to replace the old CDMA unit, for improved reception in country areas.
A GSM Account for the phone that doesn’t have a camera, as it’s not allowed at my workplace. (No NextG phones are available without an integral camera)
Now, I have the option of putting the NEXTG sim into the GSM phone for use at work and put it back into the NextG phone for other times.
This negates the need for two separate phone accounts and two separate phone numbers.
May be a bit of a hassle swapping it in and out on a daily basis, but some people (e.g. Defence Force personnel, or other people with site related camera restrictions) may like this reduced cost option.
Providing you have both a NextG handset and a working GSM handset, you only need the one (NextG) sim card and use it in whatever phone you desire.

This was confirmed to me at a telstra
shop some time ago.
any 3G phone also.
I wonder what else Telstra is holding back from the Mug customer in a effort to sell more new model phones.

Can't think why you would normally worry about doing that anyway. Next G phones are multiband and will work on GSM anyway as a fall back. The sound is better and modulation better on a Next G phone than GSM.

I reckon youd have to look pretty hard to find any phone without a camera now but apparantly they are out there

Possibly due to security issues.

IanW,
Quite correct Matey!
Not Defense, but some Manufacturing facilities like to keep their technologies (and yet to be released models) in-house.
It is that serious that anyone caught faces dismissal, or if an outside Contractor, a permanent ban from further entry.

Also look at
Southern Cross Telecom www.sctelco.com.au where you can get a GSM mobile account on the Telstra network for nothing per month if you do not use it ie you only pay for the calls you make - and the calls are cheap (40c/min, 18c flag fall).
Ideal for this situation

Hey Sandman, Couldn't you have the camera disabled and certified as so by one of the service centres so you don't have to swap simm cards all the time..? And secondly are we allowed to ask where you work if they don't allow cameras..? LOL
