Hi,
After some new ideas on a replacement for my Prado 90 TDI written off by someone who cant tell the colours of traffic lights.
I would like to keep replacement cost to $25k to $30k. It will be a daily driver, light tourer, and occasionally tow a trailer with a quad bike. Auto would be nice and I have a preferance for diesel.
Does anyone here have anything good to say on a Series 2 Disco TDI ? There seem to be a few good examples in my price range.
Any help would be great.
Thanks !

Why not another 90/95 series? Should get a good one in that price range.
Are you in
Adelaide? There's one in at the Toyota dealer up the road from me... 95 series TX turbo diesel auto, mid/high $20k...
Disco's have a reputation for poor build quality, oil leaks and electrical problems... ( make sure you get it inspected if you decide to go for one)

Why would you want to change from a ultra reliable vehicle to an unreliable one?

Go to
http://www.aulro.com for better info.
I've have a 02 D2 auto and have been through
the desert country, Kimberleys and across the Gulf and never had a drama and tows my jetski no problems.
Get avg 10.5-11l/100km best 10l/100km, will out perform any Prado in real off road conditions and the live axles front and rear can take the corro roads easy and don't break like IFS.
And for $440 you can go from 101kw to 125kw by having the ECU flashed and torque up to 450nm so for towing the big stuff no worries. Try getting that type performance increase from Toyota, Nissan or any other for under $3000. Mind goes like a rocket. I'm going to upgrade the intercooler and exhaust to 3" which will cost $2800 should get 165kw/500nm
These vehicles are just as reliable as any other 4wd, cost for parts no more expensive as Toyota and the guy's on the AULRO can general help out with any problems.
I'm hopes this helps you out, I didn't say anything negative as you didn't ask. But do urge you to check out
http://www.aulro.com that way you can see what problems D2 cam have, Landie owner don't stick their heads in the sand

Thanks guys for the replies so far - I have a few points to note.
To Mike - unfortunately I am in
Sydney, all the 90's that I have looked at have been over priced, worn out & over priced, or accident repaired prettied up & still over priced.
Mine had only 75 thou on it and I cant really see myself buying a used 90 with 150k on it for $32k. Cant really see the value.
To Madfisher - I have had Landcruisers for 25 years and have had the following with one's that I have owned . BJ42 cracked cylinder head ( I was
young & it was my first trip to
Cape York ) HZJ80 2 clutches and a new set of injectors before 100k, HZJ105 the first one was good & had no issues, the second HZJ105 spat fifth gear @ 115k, the HDJ79RV was perfect in every way except for just 2 seats, and the Prado was a bit gutless once you had a trailer on even with a chip. I love my Tojo's but they do have issues like everything else. My issue with buying another one at the moment is mainly value for money & paying a
Sydney mortgage :-) But one of the new baby troopies may be in the garage in about 4 years or so I hope.
To Foxtel - many thanks, the advice I have been given by a LR specialist is to go for a post 2001 series 2 as most things have been sorted out by then - your thoughts ?

I'd go 03 or 04 in the TD5 Disco if you can, i've had my 01 for 3yrs now and have been happy with it, i'm in the process of upgrading too, though we are thinking of a new Defender or maybe a 2nd hand D3because of the good run we've had with our D2.
I've toured around this country in
mine without a single problem towing our 1.3t offroad camper.
Common faults with the D2 are oil in the injector harness and silly ECU faults were lights come on, other than that nothing really.
Unfortunately most new electronicly controled vehicles these days have these annoying gremilins.
AULRO is a good soarce of info.
Baz.
