Hello everyone
We are a regular campers and river lovers and spend much time camping in the caravan park at blanchetown or at quieter times of the year camping for free along the river bank near the bridge. We really dont know any other places to camp for free along the river in towns nearby.. anywhere from morgan to swan reach or even mannum.
Would love to find another great place..
Thanks
Trudi

G'day Trudi,
We have been to Castle's Landing several times. It's not free, but was only about $6- a night. It's private property, located about 7klm south of Blanchetown on the Swan Reach road. You should book ahead at busier times (sorry, I don't know the phone number). You can camp right on the river front and there are a couple of shallow beaches; great for little kids.

There are signs up along the river, warning that ski boats and houseboats are not permitted to anchor etc.

To find, you just cross to the eastern side of the bridge, turn right towards Swan Reach and drive about 6 to 7klm. You should see various signs on the gates to the right of the road ("Private" etc). On the left side of the road you will come across a farm house with some signs on the front gate etc. That's where you go to pay and get a key for the gate. There are no facilities there, so you need to take your own toilet etc. There are some semi-permanent shacks/sheds etc, but I've never seen anybody there using them.

Also, there is a spot upstream of Morgan. It's on the southern side of the river about 3 klm east of the town, opposite the pumping station. However, it's pretty open (as in being available to locals for hooning purposes etc) and I don't think you'd want to camp there for more than an overnight trip
Hope this helps.

Hi Roachie,

I should have mentioned we have a boat. I am gathering that the spot you mention does not allow boats - like you mentioned no anchoring? We have driven along the road form blanchetwon to swan reach and could see the campers down there and wondered how they got there etc.. I wonder if it is worth an ask if we can camp there with the boat?

We have also hard of the big bend and beiong able to camp there but dont know anything else much about that area?

Thanks for your help
Trudi

I like Big Bend, just south of Swan Reach. Plenty of campsites, about 1km of river frontage.
Or the mouth of the Marne River, just north of Wongulla.

Cheers

Hi Glenn

We have heard about Big Bend.. Do you know if it is busy on the October long weekend and also if there are toilets or you need to take your own?

Thanks
Trudi

I think there used to be a long drop up there years ago, but I don't think it's there anymore...I take my own.
I reckon anywhere would be busy on a long weekend, especially when the weather starts warming up.
Oh, and there is a boat ramp there....that's one of the reasons I go there.

Cheers
Glenn

there's some spots near the ferry at Cadell (on the Blanchtown side turn left onto a track just before getting to the ferry and swing around under the road you have just come on) and Hogwash Bend between Cadell and Waikerie (both free).

There are a few spots around Loch Luna near Kingston on Murray and some pay for (minimal fee) sites around Katarapko (take the turnoff around Glossop)

Hope that helps

Cheers

Hi Trudi

We spent a pleasant overnight along the Murray last year, not far south of Blanchtown. I don't know what the spot was called, but it was near a Z bend. A track went over a hill and down to the river and was also access to a couple of farms and a few houses near the river. There were no facilities, but a number of other campers came. Some launched boats, and there were house boat anchor points.Signage said no trail bikes, but children disobeyed the signs until dark. Despite a group of campers around a huge bonfire, the evening was tranquil, and we enjoyed our first night along the Murray.

A lot further south, on the Narrung Peninsular there is a glorious grassy free camp near the ferry landing. Fresh water and toilets provided. This spot is outstanding for a free camp. There is a small jetty, but we only saw carp caught. Boating and fishing on Lake Alexandrina.
