Hi all,
I would like to acquaint myself with the world of VHF. Such things as correct procedures, etiquette, call signs, emergency frequencies etc. Does anyone know where I can obtain this type of information? Are there any classes or programs etc. that one can enrol in? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, although not quite what I was after this time. However, I would like in the not too distant future become more proficient with HF. The site link you have provided will be very useful. Thanks again.

Craig,

first thing you have to work out is whether you want VHF (not likely), HF (ie, AM, out of favour now) or UHF (most likely).
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

I guess it really depends on where you are going as to what you will want in the way of communication. What are you looking to use it for? Do you want it for your trips or more for recreational purposes. Once we know that we may have a better idea of which direction to point you in.

Cheers

I'm looking for information on VHS primarily for marine use as I have recently acquired a boat that is capable of "outside" (as in ocean) travel and also recreational use from home. Cheers CraigB.

as suggested are you really looking for info on VHF (mostly a marine band as far as recreational use goes) or UHF (the band used by vanners, 4byers and others)??

Try the coast guard people I'm sure they can assist.

As Landy said contact the AVCGA (coast guard) 02 9337 5033 thats the Sydney number. They run courses that qualify users within the VHF network (marine band)
Although the Ratel protocol is the same as for all Bands.
It will teach you how to use the set correctly.

Best of luck.
