Hi all, I am unsure if this is the right forum but I am on the lookout for any family who may be travelling around Australia and are teaching their kids. We are planning to do this from January 1 2008 and have been investigating option. I was told by the Dept of Ed that I can't register for home schooling because the kids travel outside of NSW, (new rule). I have also looked at Distance Learning and am a little concerned with the process of sending materials back and forth to Sydney on a week by week basis. Anyway just hoping there is someone who can give me some good practical and real experience as has happen before when I have posted questions on this forum.

We expect to be away for the whole year, the kids are 10 and 7, they will be in year 2 and 5 if they stayed at school.

Matt, Can you tell me a little about your trip. Did you get all the way around in 6 months? Did you stay in Caravan parks or other sites? Have you any suggestions for site which would suit the kids and us. Did you camp or van it? Did you focus on any specific caravan chain or just use them all? Any further info would be helpful. Thanks Ron

Hi dingerbell,
I am a school teacher and if I were you I wouldnt be to concerned about formal schooling as I feel that they will learn more on the road and travelling than they would in the classroom. If you do the normal things like national parks etc. and get them to read all the brochures out to you and be part of deciding what you would like to see and do go to your NRMA or equivelent and get a set of maps for the kids so they can do distances and map reading etc they will be fine, On a trip out past Mitchell to Longreach our kids did a graph on the different kinds of road kill with tally marks adnt hen worked out the most common mainly to kill the boredom. Best of Luck I wish we had taken our kids out of school and done it but we didint get into travelling ubtil the eldest was in high school. barb

Thanks for the positive comment. We intend to do lots of parks as well as museums and industrial trip, canneries and processing plants etc. I am sure we can find lots of ways to use the current info they have been learning from school. The problem seems to be more the bureaucratic one of taking the kids from school and not registering them with the department. My understanding is they are required to be registered with someone but since the departments home schooling section indicated that they would not register them I am a little unsure. I still have a number of paths to follow but would appreciate any others experiences. Enjoy your travels!

Dinger,

We travelled for 6 months with our kids (10 and 6) last year. Reason I asked about their age is that in the ACT (and NSW I believe), you are required to register for home schooling if you withdraw them for longer than 6 months. It sounds strange that you are having difficulty doing so.

Regulations aside, my advice is don't get too stressed about formal schooling for your kids. As long as you keep the basics ticking over (writing and reading specifically) then there are heaps of opportunities to work other 'schooling' into your daily activities as others here have suggested. Try to make it a fun part of your itinerary rather than a sit down chore each day. My wife and I decided that we are good parents but lousy school teachers (something about the chemistry with your own children I think).

If your kids can do some work in the car without getting sick, then it frees you all up to enjoy the great spot you will inevitably arrive at. We found it hard to get our fellas to sit down for work when there was a great swimming hole 20 feet away.

Ours went into year 2 and 5 on return and were a little 'behind' in some areas but picked it up unbelievably quickly. Eight months later and there is no difference. It was a small price to pay for the wonderful experiences they had and gave them a perspective that not all of their class mates could claim.

Bottom line, don't stress about the schooling, they will get heaps of time to catch up but only one opportunity that you are offering them. Enjoy the moment, because it goes quicker than you could believe, and trust your kids to catch up as they need on return.

Enjoy what will be a very rewarding family experience.

Matt.

Hi, We are planning a 12 month trip with 2 boys (currently in Prep and grade 2). We are hoping to leave about April. I have spoken to both of the boys teachers and they both agree that it will be a great learning experience for the kids. She said even if they didn't keep up to speed with conventional school work, they will just slip back into mainstream school at the end of the trip and catch up no worries. All agree that it will be an awesome experience for children.
Good luck.....may see you on the road.

Thanks for the info. Are you intending just to withdraw them from school? Which state are you from? Have your registered with the department in any way?

I'm a school teacher too! (year 7 at the moment).

get them to keep a blog (or even better a real webpage) that they update and share with their class.

The class will love to keep track of their travels, the teacher may even be able to utilise your travels within the classroom.

(I have one of my students leaving to travel Europe in a motorhome tomorrow, for a number of months, we have planned with his parents for him to do some formal assessment via email, but also for him to keep a travel log and send us pictures and stories on a regular basis)

Thanks very much for the comment Dave, we will be having the kids keep digital diaries and I have been playing with some site for posting pictures. We don't want to make the kids to jealous and were thinking of only sending info on an irregular basis.

DingerBell , we have a 6mth trip planned from March next yr , our young fella will be 9 and in grade 5 , we have arranged with his school to supply us with a very basic outline of what he would miss during his 6 mths away and have arranged email /newsletter communication between us and the school so that his whole school and his class in particular can follow his adventures , as others have stated and his school teachers and principle say , he is bound to learn more in the 6 mths than he would being in the class room,

We are from Victoria. At this stage we are thinking of enroling the boys with the Distance Education Centre.
We will endeavour to keep up with their schooling but won't be to strict about it so that thier holiday experience isn't too weighed down with formalities.
