Hi all
Does anyone know what the barra fishing is like at spots near
Darwin. I will be up there on the weekend for a week to visit Kadadu and
Litchfield and have a spare day which I was thinking of spending fishing for barra. Are they around at this time of year? Somewhere in my memory there is a recollection that fishing for barra is best in months containing "r", so Sept should be ok.
Also, any recommendations of a good charter mob?
Thanks in advance
Tim

Gday Tim S
Back in the old days, we used to swim across the salt arms of the
East Alligator river with a net in hand, tie it to a tree and then swim back . When the tide went out, we went back to get our fishes, which were quite often eaten before we arrived.Just heads hanging from a net , suspended above the
water. That was in a month with an "R". I think the problem was those long tail , big snout dogs that live in the bush up there.

I'm not particularly knowledgable but I think it has more to do with
water temp and level - which may vary in timing year to year.
Should be in with a reasonable chance tho. Suspect you'll find the good charter mobs booked out?

Do you have a boat? If not then don't bother as land based Barra fishing can be a pointless exercise, but not impossible. Get yourself onto a charter operator who can take you out to one of the spots.
If you have a boat then the closest for a day trip out of
Darwin are Cooroboree
Billabong or
Shady Camp. There are some spots around the estuaries around
Darwin harbour but you need a local to put you onto them.

Try this guy
We caught barra all day with him a couple of years ago.
A couple of blokes on the charter drove down from
Darwin on the morning before we left, so it can't be too far - sorry I can't remember how long it took.

Barra will be just coming back on the bite over the past couple of weeks as the
water temp rises. They go off the bite over the middle of winter (if you can cal it that in the NT).
Although I've fished the NTfor Barra (was up ther for 6 weeks earlier this year), I have not done so around
Darwin, but be assured the barra are there.
As suggested, if you have just one day, get a guide or go on a charter. Otherwise it is hit and miss - mostly miss until you learn your way around.

Tim,
Actually , your post heading is the name of what I reckon , is the best fishing guide company in the NT . I think they still do day trips to Corroboree , Rockhole and
Shady Camp .
Getting near time of the year for barra , but if they are slow , there should plenty of saratoga on the chew.
Willie .
