Our GU is slowly being geared up for our trek from Perth, across the Great Central Road to Alice up to Kununurra, over the top (NT & Nth Qld) down through central NSW, SA and back to Perth. We will be towing a 6-berth van.
After lots of input from this forum, we now have a 2" lift (we went Dobinsons springs, Dobinsons big-bore shocks Dobinsons steering damper+ Firestone Air-bags) and a full length alloy roof rack.
We are now after some info on;
1. Second back-up battery/power pack (Can't fit reserve battery under bonnet - it's a TI 4800 - and we have 4 kids, so can't go in the back)....... does any body have one on the Roof-Rack?
2. Snatch straps - have heard of people using some from rigging shops
3. Portable compressors - so many to chose from - Help!!
4. Jerrys for fuel and water - Metal or plastic
5. Spares wheels - How many do people take?

In regards to your request for a back-up battery/power pack solution and your comment that as you have 4 kids, it can't go in the back. Why not???

A portable battery pack such as the Thumper from Homeof12volt can go anywhere you choose, in complete safety and will charge on the go from the vehicle alternator. It's an AGM battery pack which releases nothing to the outside environment.

Hi perthburts,
1. Carry a cranking battery in the caravan, secured and a 15 amp charger for when you're running your generator ( to power the van)
2. If you're travelling by yourself, two winch extension straps - 4000 KG, and a rated drag chain.
3. Blue Tongue or Big Red, cheap and nasty ones may let you down ;-) when you don't need it.
4. You don't indicate Petrol or Diesel engine?? When travelling through outback communities, your fuel needs to be secure and IMO ... LOCKED! Multiple plastic containers for water ( No indication of water capacity in van?)
5. If same wheel/tyre on vehicle and van, two on rims, one carcass and tyre repair equipment.

May be over-kill in some respects..... but you are travelling with children on board.

Hope this helps somewhat.
Have a great trip.
Regards,
Wayne.

1. Second "back-up" battery ?
Ummm, to back up what ??
Do you want a spare "Cranking" battery ???

Use a large AGM Deep Cycle battery.
It can be used as either a Cranking battery (as mine is) to start the vehicle or to effortlessly run all the accessories.

It can be placed ANYWHERE you want it, in the van as a seat or behind a bed, behind the kids in the vehicle, on it's side or it's end etc.

4. Use METAL fuel containers for fuel and Plastic for water.
