We are planning a trip to the Flinders Ranges, what walks etc should we avoid with 5 kids( youngest 3 1/2 years ) in tow. What places would you recommend etc. We would like to get away from caravan parks etc.

Out There, lots of nice bush camp areas to stop off say Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge track too. Need to be self contained though. Lots of places where the kids could get around with some care. I don't know much about how far you expect them to walk though.

Walks like St Mary's Peak would be too long for the young ones. I found it strenuous back in my 20s on my knees.

You should avoid the Heyson Walking Trail for a start ;-)
A big place is the Flinders.....which area are you looking at Out There? A good recource for planning walks can be found in Ron Moons Adventurers Guide but really with such young kids 10 minute walks from camp may just be enough. The Flinders is renowned for being difficult to bushwalk being so dry, rocky & exposed.

Hi

we went to the Flinders last year with two kids, aged 7 & 5, we went on a few walks, there are a couple at Rawnsley Park that would be ok, only short walks. At Wilpena we went on the easiest walk that took us to th homestead, it was about 5kms I think. It was very easy, no climbing, and we took it at a very easy pace...there was a bit of moaning towards the end..but overall a great walk.

The driving is great in the Flinders, not sure where abouts you want to go...but Warraweena is a great place to stay and the kids will love it, there's some exploring to be done, and it's great camping too.

We also walked into Sacred Canyon with the kids which was great too...

cheers

Lyn

You'll find heaps of bush camping spots in Brachinna Gorge, just keep your eyes open for tracks off the main road. The campground at Wilpena is huge and you should have no trouble getting away from the main tent city ..and you've got the facilities. There's an excellent Information Centre & shop at the Pound, with all the info on the region, map for walks etc. There are a number of short drive-walks and if with the parks' info sheets, there's an extra depth of interest with things to watch out for on the walks. Take warm gear. If it gets below freezing at night the water freezes in the pipes. It got down to minus 9 ..yep that's minus 9, three days straight when we were there a few weeks ago. Don't go looking for an early shower ..and, er the toilets don't flush until the pipes thaw. Pays to be first up.
If you can get up to Arkaroola, there's heaps of good stuff that the kids'll like. Films, talks on the natural history of the area, observatory.
