Just to follow on about camping area's in and around the Painted Desert. I rang Evelyn Downs this morning and am informed that both their and Copper Hills no longer allow camping, they have been taken over by new ownership.

Below bucky mentions Arckaringa, who I am waiting to hear back from, but it seems only there and Cadney have camping now...

This outback is getting smaller all the time. I worry about our off spring even being able to get off the Black Top in the future.

Yep,

Arkaringa Station is very close to the Painted Desert Lookout points.

The best time to check out the view is sunset. If you stop at the first lookout a while before sundown, you take a bit of a walk from the car parking area to the higher viewing points. A very good little stroll too., the land is "ageless".

Then travel to the second lookout, where you can park your car, take out your deck chairs and bottle of champagne and watch the sunset while you have some celebratory bubbly. Then it is an easy drive back to the Station for more festivities around the camp fire. The camping area is basic, but has to toilet/shower facilities and there is cabin style accommodation if necessary. They even have a "solar powered" phone if you need to make a call.

The young couple who are caretakers of the property are very friendly, as is their dog.
Watch out for the cat though, it will grab your tucker in the flash of an eye. You can walk down to the water hole and look for signs of the Parentie lizard which is native to the area.

A great place that won't disappoint you.
Bill
