I was just wondering if anyone has any information on the current condition of the Bloomfield Track.

I have been reading some of the archives and one post in 2005 said that it was not suitable for towing.

We are going to be towing and off road camper trailer with a TD5 Disco, do you envisage any problems with that?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't have any problems with towing an off road camper trailer with my Jackaroo last year, so I can't see why you would have problems.

Maybe if it's wet you could have some excitement going up or down the several really steep bits.

I wouldn't envisage any problems Cram.

The steeper inclines and declines are concreted.

Provided weather/tide conditions enable you to cross the creeks, you will be OK.

Cram,

Just come home last week after 4 weeks doing the Lower Gulf and the NT side, including the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown. We did the trip with a TD Hilux Twincab and Campomatic off road camper. With 4 people on board, and all the gear we found some of the inclines needed Low Gear, but apart from that, no problems. Have been told by locals the track can be slippery when wet. With that in mind I would say that you should do it easily. I may get shouted down, but I would stay in High 4WD.

You can always ask at the Ferry if your worried. Some great countryside, you won't regret the trip.

Thanks for that, we are very excited about this leg of our trip.

Our vehicle is permanently in H4WD. I have read in a few places and heard from someone who did the track towing that on the big slopes that L4WD is the go?

Hi Cram
There is one hill that is very steep that will probably need Low Low depending on the type of vehicle you are driving and the load you are towing. I had a L300 in Low 2nd gear going up it in the 1986 and a Ford van with dual rear wheels failed to make it with 3 tries. Even if they had they would have had trouble with the creek crossing later on.
I would say that you should have no trouble as they have concreted the steep hill and I’m sure the river crossing will be less rocky than in the 80s

has the following info
Steep Climbs and Descents
There are two steep climbs and descents on the track - Donovan’s Range is 20% (1:5), and Cowie Range is up to 33% (1:3). You need to be in the correct gear to climb these hills, and it is recommended to change before the climb. It is not fun to have to do a change on a 1:3 slope. If the slope is slippery, you will also need 4WD to be engaged.
