Hi all,
Driving to Sydney later this week and want The quickest route. The Pacific hwy looks the quickest on paper, is it in practice?

Thanks,
PJ.

Yes PJ, Pac Hwy is the best, recent road works make it a quick trip now.

Hi Paul, I have found the Pacific to be the quickest myself. I have also driven the New England highway and found it to take longer but must admit beautiful road to drive nice and wide but took me longer. Have driven and rode both roads. I would say the Pacific but maybe others might say the New England. Watch the fixed speed camera's either way. Regards Steve M

Hi Paul, if your coming from the eastern or northern suburbs or Brisbane itself, head straight down the Pacific Hwy.

If you are starting from the western suburbs, Ipswich area, head out on the Mt Lindesay Hwy to just south of Rothdowney and then take the Summerland Way to Grafton and the Pacific Hwy from there.

You will cut at least 30 minutes off the time going via the Summerland Way from the western suburbs.

New England Hwy doesn’t have much traffic on it these days but it’s still slower than the coast.

Interesting, as you say, depends where you are in Brisy and where you are going to in Sydney.

The Summerland way does work well.
See what happens with Tugun now the bypass is going in.
Could save 15 mins plus there, and combined with the new section down to Byron, and still being extended south, it could be quicker soon.

For Penrith / Richmond area from western Brisy, I always found the Newell Highway a better drive, via Coonabrabran, Gulgong, Lithgow and the Bell road. About 20 mins longer than the New England, but a lot easier drive.

Eastern Brisy to north eastern Sydney, Pacific.

I am south west Brisy, so it is a toss between New England and Pacific for east/central Sydney.

Best run I ever had was about 10 years ago from Sydney UBD to my office in inner Brisbane was 10.5 hours. Got every green light heading north out of Sydney at 4:00am and no hold ups on the New England. One 10 min stop at Scone for fuel.

Wouldn't touch the Pacific Highway with a barge pole....

New England is a far better run IMO. Time wise there's bugger all difference, it all depends on what traffic you encounter.
Of more relevance is where in Sydney are you going? If your going to the western suburbs then the New England and the Putty is a no brainer. Anywhere else, New England to Singleton, across to Maitland and then down the freeway.

Have to agree John.
The worse part of the trip is heading south from Hornsby especially heading towards the western suburbs.

Thanks all, seems for us the Pacific will be the go, as we thought. Good to get your thoughts though.

If you leave the bp truckstop at Yatala/Stapylton around 6-7pm and tuck yourself in behind one of the many overnight express freight interstate trucks you'll roll into Sydney around 9hrs 45 mins later.
