I am heading for
Adelaide shortly.
Am I better going via Horsham or
Mildura?
Thank you.

Depends whether you want a quick trip or a holiday. Via
Mildura is twice as long, but if you stopped at all the
places to see along the way via Horsham you could take a month to do the trip.
Happy
trails, Mike.

Thank you.
I was thinking of stopping over-night in Horsham. How far to
Adelaide from there?

Remember if you go via
Mildura, you will go through a fruit fly inspection near
Renmark. If you go via Horsham then you will avoid it. I know which way I would go.
Horsham is more direct, if time is an issue.

You still go thru a fruit fly place at Pinaroo.
And they are there for a reason too. I dislike anyone who intentionally goes around these things. Usually means they are carrying the very things the inspection stations are there for.
Not having a go at you personally Zebra, just giving some info and making a point while I am at it.
Cheers

By travelling the Dukes Hwy, Horsham, Nhill, Bordertown you will not have to go through Pinaroo therefore you won't be 'avoiding or intentionally going around' any of the checkpoints.
Melbourne to
Adelaide is an easy day's drive. Avoid travelling at night if you can.

Sorry, yep - Pinaroo is on Mallee Hwy. That is the one I use to go to
Sydney. Shorter that going up via
Mildura. Go via
Ouyen and Tooleybuc and meet up with main Hwy at
Balranald.
Yes, the Dukes Hwy to
Melbourne route is a bit far south for the fruit fly
places.
Cheers

I thought I have seen fruit fly
bins on most of the roads on the Vic/
SA border, so quarantine applies to all roads whether there is border patrol or not. Don't be a richard cranium and bypass your responsibilities.

Yep! that shows it up pretty
well.
If you just want to get there ASAP then via Horsham is the way to go.

Peter, I have known people do only 1/3 the distance on the GOR and take eight hours mate. I reckon the NRMA are speeding.

We do this trip regularly from
Adelaide as we have a daughter and her family in
Melbourne.
Western Highway via Horsham, then Dukes Hwy (Bordertown, Keith etc) is definitely the quickest route. It is a good road and there are plenty of passing lanes so trucks should not be a problem. Speed limits are 110kph on freeways to near
Ballarat, then 100kph to Bordertown, then 110 to
Adelaide. There are plenty of loos and food spots along the way.
It is an easy day run - allow a bit over 9 hrs or so, depending on stops. We rarely do it at night - need to look out for roos too much!
An alternative not mentioned by others is to go via
Bendigo,
Ouyen,
Pinnaroo and
Tailem Bend. This is a little longer, but more of the highway is 110kph rated, and much quieter traffic than Western/Dukes Hwys. Road is not quite as good as Western/Dukes, and fewer passing lanes, but less traffic counters that. I would be reluctant to go this way at night as
well due to roos.
Going via
Mildura is definitely the tourist route.
Enjoy the trip.
