Haven't looked for maybe over a year at this topic... what "moving map" GPS navigation software products are there in the market like Oziexplorer nowadays? Anything for Mac OS X or are they all Windows?
Do any of the navman-style GPS units come even close in comparison to a GPS/laptop setup in terms of usable screen size?
cheers

I have a Navman GPS 40i and have not been very happy with it.
On a resent trip from
Wubin to
Perth it tried to send me off the main road left up a farm track and the send me through Toojay. Also on leaving the Freeway at Hodges drive it wanted me to turn left when I knew I should turn right into St. Michaels Road.
Does anybody know the reason for all these problems????

Great link - what's the 30 second spiel on Tracks4Australia? Is it similar to a freeware set of maps/coordinates requiring other mapping software?

Scubaroo, It al depends on what you wan it to do, we use Ozi Explorer and City Navigator 7 on our lap top that gives us the best of both worlds.
We use City Nav for voice turn by turn instructions on main roads in country and the city, Ozi Explorer and Tracks 4 Australia for off road work with mapping down to 1:25,000.
You may want to look at a PDA.
The other thing is a laptop will do so much more and hold more maps then any GPS or PDA will but is not as user friendly and alot bigger.

Basically looking for a setup for a trip around Oz beginning in April - roughly speaking, Melb to Alice to Kimberleys via Tanami, then Litchfield/
Kakadu,
Savannah Way,
Weipa, then across to
Cooktown area and down the coast to
Brisbane before shooting back down to
Melbourne.
Have used a handheld Garmin eTrex in conjunction with a compass and paper maps for years, and have state by state paper maps for the entire country, but I like the idea of having digital mapping on a trip of this scale!

We use digital maps ranging from 1:25000 to 1:250000 depending on what we are doing.
When use to this way of navigating it becomes so easy to work out where and what way you are giong.
The other advantage is you can overlay points of interest like fuel,
toilets and
camping areas.
We also use UBD city and country maps.
Have found laptops are easier to do this on due to the screen size, res, processing power and storage, you can always use a touch screen mounted on you dash and mount the computer out of the way.
Laptops are getting cheaper all the time so the cost factor to set up is econonical.
Laptop new $700
Garmin GPS18 $175
Power adaptor $ 80
Garmin City Nav $270
Ozi Explorer $130
UBD maps $130
Hemma maps $150
Other maps you can download for nothing or aren,t dear to buy.
