hey there my missus and my 7motnh old son are planning to do a trip around oz starting in sydney and trying to 500kms at the end of each week eg. first stop benboyd national park 7days 2nd stop wilsons prom 7days. we r going to be flexible with the time frame so if we feel like we want to keep going or stay longer in a particular place we will. we have allowed 8months for the trip ....now i wish we had longer but have commitments in sydney after that and mite not get away for a trip like this for quite some time so we r going to try and do the whole trip within 8months. going from syd to melb then melb to adel adel to perth the darwin then cooktown and back down the east coast with variou stops along the way each around 500kms apart.(we r trying not to plan to much because we want to sort of meander our way). We r planning to leave sydney late oct early nov. and plan to leave perth and head north in mid to late march. If anyone could offer any advice or insight to weather or trip ideas anything in general it would ne appreciatted
thanks Beau

Maybe March is a bit early to head north from Perth ..... but it depends on the weather. I suggest you wait for about 4 years for the sake of your boy. Not much fun for a 7 month old but great fun for a 4 and a half year old. Time it so that you get home and settled in time for him to enrol at school. His confidence and general knowledge will be greatly enhanced by the trip.

Gaday Beau, 7 month olds are easy to travel with although with the heat in WA you'll need to be wary of dehydration/heatstroke. Take a travel cot that's easy to set up with a fly net that fits over the top. Doubles as a playpen & bed. A tarp to spread on the ground will allow the young man to roll & crawl around without getting dirty. A kids backpack is a necessity as most attractions are a short walk from the car park.
Forget your 500km main stops as some areas require more time & others like the Nullarbor don't. Pick up the key guide books for each area before you go (eg: Vic High Country/Flinders/ Kimberly/Central Oz) as they have all the places worth visiting showing camp sites, history, attractions, maps & contacts. These will help you with spacing the trip to suit the time you have. Set a few dates that you need to be in key city's otherwise just wing it. We always drop in on the main tourist information centres as they give free local maps & show attractions that may not be in the guide books. In the smaller remote towns the pub is the best spot to get ideas off the locals.
In the time you have available touring the southern states through the summer is a good plan. The later you can leave it the more comfortable it will be when you get to Wa/Central Oz/Darwin etc. Possibly December would be ideal.
Don't try to see it all as you'd need 2 years otherwise have a great trip :-)

Thank crackles yeah we have a porta cot with fly net and tarps allready sorted yeah might try and leave a little later only was worried about the christmas holiday traffic and yahoos at the campgrounds . But i like your ideas and appreciate it . I suppose i shoud say that we r driving a ford futura s/wagon on duel fuel lpg and unleaded. Have a tinnie with large 3room tent and shadehouse camp kitchen toilet and shower tent with hot water on demand ,3 way fridge 1,kva digital generator to recharge 100ah deep cycle battery for lights, tv l,aptop ,phones and of course camera. Any ideas on wat i might be missing or advice relating to our trip would be appreciated.

Well Beau it sounds like you have the basics covered. Your equipment will suit finding central base camps & doing day trips from there as with the gear you have it will take a bit of time to set up. Could make up a small spares box with a few bits for the car, boat & camp otherwise see how you go & pick up anything you need on the way. You'll see heaps of great ideas in the camp grounds as you go. With internet coverage you can check on EzOz for places to see as you're going........too easy.
Cheers Craig..............

To get the weather right, I'd be doing Melbourne in March, Adelaide in April, Perth in May/June, And be going around the top in June/July/August/September.

just fits in with the best times in all those places. With a 7monther, you don't want to be risking really hot weather.

Hi nthshorelad,
I asked RTA about this in Jan 2007. Their reply was:

Customers who are travelling in another state, except the ACT, can
> obtain an inspection report from:
>
> the registering authority in the state or territory (eg Vicroads)
> an agent that the interstate authority has approved
> a recognised motor industry body that is a member of the Australian
> Automobile Association (ie RACV, RACWA, RACQ, RAA South Australia).
>
> In all these cases the inspecting agent must be at least 50km from the NSW border.
>
> Important: Heavy vehicles subject toe RTA/HVIS inspections cannot be renewed on equivalent pink slips issued by interstate authorities.
>
> Inspection reports received from interstate agents must record
> inspection details similar to those for NSW AIS inspection reports.
> The inspection report must define requirements such as braking,
> lighting, steering; and the vehicle must be in a satisfactory
> condition overall. A letter from an interstate garage stating that
> the vehicle is 'roadworthy' is not acceptable.
>
> Note: Brake test printouts are not required on interstate inspection reports.

Cheers,
Peter B
