Hi everyone,
A few months ago I had the original base to my Cobb Cooker melt on me and Cobb Australia replaced it with the new mesh base. Since then I have cooked a few roasts with very poor results and it seems as though the new metal base looses a lot of heat through the wire mesh on the outside of the base.
A bit of research showed that a few of you have bought a product called a CobBra which fits either on the inside or the outside of the base, and it seems as though that has resolved the problem of heat lose.
I have just purchased a CobBra and will be taking it away with me this weekend to see how it goes.
I will post a verdict based on my experience next week.
Cheers,
Cruiser

Yep ... not surprised it's not from Cobb. That would be admitting the problem exists.
Looking forward to your findings.

I made my own up. Had some sheeting doing nothing so just cut it to fit inside wire mesh. fits nice and works OK. brian

I've been thinking along the same lines Brian.
Even a piece of alfoil inside the mesh would most likely work.

G'day Cruiser (and Wayne)
another problem I've encountered with the Cobb, particularly when baking, is that the lid does not hold the heat sufficiently once the fuel beads get under half size (unless you've got them piled high). If it's a bit windy and you can't put the unit in a sheltered spot, the problem increases. I half solved the issue this year by wrapping a beach towel round it (leaving the vent holes clear). I'm going over to see Klaus at In-front this week to see about some mods to my rear wheel bags and will discuss the issue with him to see if he can fabricate a heat resistant lid cover. The wrap around bra idea has been a great success. Will post the results here.
Cheers. Mick

Hi Mick,
haven't had a prob with the lid losing heat that i have noticed. I will be curious as to what comes out of this. Mind you i am sitting here in jeans and t shirt right now in
Sydney, i was talking to Truckster last night and he was freezing in
Melbourne, this may be a factor hehehehehe

Well everyone, the results are in on the efficiency of the CobBra.
We went to a coastal NP on the long weekend and on Friday night did a leg of lamb and veg in the Cobb and used the CobBra and I have to say the results were very pleasing.
This is the 3rd roast since the base was replaced with the newer style, but the 1st one with the CobBra and difference was amazing.
I would recommend to anyone else who has the problem with the new style base to either get one, make one or use foil around the inside or outside and I garuantee you will not be disappointed.
Its just a shame that Cobb wont admit it is a problem and offer something similar.
Cheers,
Cruiser

Actually Cruiser,
i was talking to Brian from Cobb at the
Sydney camping show earlier this year and he says they do have a shield type thing which does the job too. it is made from wetsuit material.
Apparently it fits around the base and also slips onto the rim of the lid to hold it on. Mainly for use when on a boat on their boat mount which hangs over the
water. It prevents the lid from falling into the
water during windy weather and rocking seas.
I have no idea of the price they ask for it and i haven't looked at their site lately to see if it is shown there....
Think i'll stick with Klaus's device.....simple and effective
