Yes or No ?? gas is not available everywhere , so it all depends on where you realy want to go , around Oz is a very big statement ,all major
places have gas , get off the black stuff and it gets a little harder to find and I wou;ld hate to think of the $ cost per klm per lt of a 4.8 towing a 23fter on petrol .,,

The 4.8 will tow your van
well & the fuel will be about 18-22ltrs per 100klms towing if you take care & that's about the same as a 4.2 diesel towing the same size van, But if you don't take care it will be closer to 30+ ltrs per 100klms, but it is nice to be able to climb the hills without thinking that you will be going into low range
When in a remote areas you will have to forget the gas
I have the 4.2d & a freind has the 4.8p & towing simular weights he is normally only 2-4ltrs more than me over the trip, but he does have wait for me to catch up & when on gas hes cost $ is half
I was just in NT & just running about on the hwy with that 130klm speed limit he's truck gets better consuption than
mine
i would still have the desiel but i would not be put off the 4.8 hope its some help

If money is no option, go the 4.8 and throw on a long range fuel
tank when gas isn't available. The amount of money you need to throw at the 4.2 to perform like the 4.8 would pay for the extra fuel anyway.

You can get long range tanks for both the main and sub-
tank, so it shouldn't be a problem. Have a chat to your friendly ARB or TJM man. Both will happily take your money from you.

I have a GQ with a duel/fuel 4.5 in it. We have just done a 7k trip up through Canarvon Gorge, Cania Gorge, and as far inland to
Rubyvale then across to Fraser Island. We averaged 26/100 and had to use 2.5
tank of petrol which wasn't too bad. I have my doubts on getting 18-22/100 as I don't think the 4.8 is that much better than the 4.5. I was also only towing a Jayco Eagle Outback which is a bit lighter and smaller than your van. I must admit though, I do not drive it for economy. I did some calculations between gas and diesel, and would have used about $100 more on diesel over that distance. Unless you are intending to go off the beaten track you should be ok with with duel fuel. I don't know what the prices of gas are over in the West but the most we paid was about 82 cpl and that was in
Walgett if I remember correctly. The cost of gas in some
places certainly raises some eyebrows. Cheers, Chambo

145lt replacement main
tank available. Also a sub
tank replacement available but it depends on where the gas
tank is and how much room it takes up as to whether these will fit??
Cheers, Trevor.

Despite the rumours, the 4.8 is a great vehicle. Be nice on the right boot and the consumption will be nice to you ...... Work out the diff in price for diesel and ULP ......the diesel blokes only fool themselves if they think they are better off ........I have a 2002 4.8 and will not swap it for any diesel ...........

Hi 2-Gees
You don't say if auto manual , but no issue with performance anyway. Even today no other vehicle can match it from that point of view, inculding a brand new one as they have 5kw less.
Gas looks great - personnaly I have stayed away from it for range reasons , however most of those I know of with it have been happy.
Car on gas depends on the quality of the installation and a couple have been quite unhappy and unloaded there cars after expensive valve train sues.
I would not buy one unless the head/valves had been specifically checked and were ok.

Hi Robin, yes its an auto, Ido have gas on my rodeo and the performance is the same but I get 100 k less per
tank than petrol so at this stage I think I will go for duel fuel patrol that Ive found as it has every thing included, Thanks mate

The 4.8 on LPG is the gruntiest, torqueist thing dollar for dollar at the pump that is available.
My folks tow a 22 foot Jayco with the works with their 4.8 on LPG and it is superb.
No diesel can get close to the grunt or the low cost to run.
Don't even consider anything else.

We are currently touring Oz in a 2004 4.8lt Patrol on Petrol and gas with a boat on top.
We have abt. 80lt tank for petrol and 95 lts of gas (its a sequential injection system) and it pulls the 22' heavily laden Compass caravan with ease We get around 4.5ks to the litre on petrol and abt. 3.7 - 4ks litre on gas, and there is no difference in performance.
We've done nearly 30,000 ks since March over all terrains - we've come over the Nullabore, over the mountains from Nowra thru Kangaroo Valley,
Borroloola to
Burketown on gravel roads and it's never missed a beat!
The only time we've had to carry petrol was in remote areas -
Borroloola to
Burketown because
Hells Gates is closed - its just a matter of planning ahead - go for it !

Sorry for late reply.
Normanton would have to be the dearest - had gas around $1.40 only about .30c less that unleaded! We carried an extra 80 but didn’t even use 60lts.
Hope this helps.
