Just for the record I have a LG TU 500 phone on the Next G net work with a car areal and a patch lead.

I also have a Telstra CDMA phone.

Fact 1 The CDMA reception stops 10 km out side Jabiru and at ide Jabiru leaving a non connection of approx 180km where as the next G there is only 50 km I can't get reception between Darwinthe turn off to the Kakadu hwy near Cooinda about 5 km.

Fact 2 The next G network works all the way from Jabiru to cooinda and some 50 km further it also works at Jim Jim camp ground 60 km from cooinda and 70 km from Jabiru.

Fact 3 The CDMA only works to the Adelaide River and 10 km out side Jabiru leaving a non connection of approx 180km where as the next G there is only 50 km I can't get reception between Darwin and Jabiru.

Fact 4 With or without the areal the Next G works way better than the CDMA net work between Darwin and Kakadu and Arnhemland, yes thats right the next G net work works in Oenpelli in Arnhemland.

If you think I'm just got lucky well I have 2 phones that get the same reception, so if you think I got really lucky, think again because I very rarely have a problem with my Qualcom GS sat phone either.

If you "can't believe it's really that bad", you obviously can't read.
I would say that, conservatively, somewhere around 70% of comments on this site, about 'Next-G', have been derogatory & has been the sole reason why we still have our CDMA.

All this new digital and semi-digital technologies is pure cr@p. Oh, well, as least if comparing one to good analog mobile. Use to have one 10 years or so back. Those days mobile was made in proper places (not in China), been full of elements (not just one dogy chip), been size of brick (with appropriate weight), but they was warking. And warking everywhere!

Hi, I am still waiting to change over & I am waiting to see if Nokia brings out a more basic model , my mate has just changed his , its a Nokia 6120 Next G, and his shows a 3G icon in the top l/h corner in the town and it goes to Next G when in the country,
We are still doing our local testing ( Flinders area).
But it seems as good on the highway so far.

I've got a Next G phone and live in the Canberra area .
The phones I've had or the network is terrible, certainly not as good as my past GSM phones . I get far more dropouts now and I've not noticed any improvement in coverage around the area .

When GSM replaced analogue there was a huge outcry about pee weak coverage, dropouts etc.

When CDMA was introduced to provide greater coverage in the country there was a huge outcry about pee weak coverage and dropouts etc.

When Next G was introduced... well, you know the story.

While I hate Telstra because of its systemic arrogance (I was a Telstra Dealer for a decade) they should be allowed to shut down the CDMA network and concentrate on getting the Next G network properly up to speed because when it works it's great.

there was nothing wrong with cdma but for lack of towers which you would expect a long way out anyway. 3g was introduced to get us dummys to use a lot of expensive features that we dont really need. My mate's son works for Telstra and gave him a 3g so he could look at him while they talked. (wow) Mate could not get a signal in Cairns.

Telstra reminds me of the banks who did their best to tell the customer what they really wanted and screwed them. They both upset me so much I ditched them in favour of people who offer a service.

As a family business,we have a few new nextG phones. One LG 550 (Telstra BLUE Tick of approval) with patch lead/ cdma broomstick in western nsw gets less reception than the new nokia 6120 which sits in a home made cradle with a proximity type booster suitable to a gsm phone, but linked to cdma aerial. Telstra reps said it wouldn't work, but it shines. I'm happy as i have a nokia phone (without the blue tick of approval ) which is a good phone and it performs wherever the LG 550 does and some. Another is the samsung A411 ( again blue tick approved), and in not so remote areas is absolutely hopeless. The Nokia outperforms it without any aerial assist. Next G does have it's problems with drop-outs and busy networks, My concern is that this will probably get worse when everyone has switched over from CDMA, but I guess this remains to be seen. We are all presuming at the moment. The so called experts at Telstra tell us that things will improve once the CDMA network is switched off!!! Here's hoping!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems at the moment there is no consistency with the service / reception. You can have FULL SIGNAL STRENGTH and the call will drop out due to " busy network". It's not as though this happens in the city with possibly thousands of phones within a few km's, we're talking country NSW with possibly hundreds of next G phones within a 50km radius. It remains to be seen that in the long run we will all have a better communications service provider with nextG.

I regulary use my next G as a Gsm phone with a different sim and there is no difference in performance (ie next G aint any better reception wise than ordinary phones)
Let alone coming close to CDMA performance.
If anything using the GSM is better as if there are recepton gaps while talking it wont cut straight out but keeps the connection for a bit . Much better than constant callbacks when on the edge of reception
