Nice to have new car Choppa.

Only thing I've been hearing from workshops is that they go a bit better if anything but that they are apparently easier to upset with sub-standard fuel.

Thanks Robin, have done some homework before purchasing the patrol but the new common rail injection was the only thing I couldnt find out about.I think nissan have ironed out most of the patrols faults.Just hope this isnt a new one.

You will be very happy, a great vehicle. Goes well but can be slugish on takeoff untill turbo jumps in. Don't be perturbed about negative feedback you may get about the 3ltr all issues associated with these motors where with series one and two. These issues where related to the sump not being big enough plus other oil related issues. These have been sorted and owners of series 3 and 4 have reported not issue above the norm for any vechicle.
Took ours on a 7 day camping trip over summer through vic high country and deddick trail region (away from bush fires) and it performed superbly. Enjoy mate

Just to add only issue I have had was the primer gumming up from dodgy fuel.

Don't know about Richards issue , but have been thru same thing on same motor in a near new Navara. When it ran out of fuel once the primer couldn't do its job mainly because fuel filter was clogged. THink it was only 5000 on clock. Only a hard tow got it going.

I would strongly advised any 3lt owner to go thru the process of running out of fuel and restarting car before a big trip just so you know you can do it.

Did this on my car , but its petrol so doesn't really count much.

Sorry, that should read "Series".

There is even a post on this site about a GUIV going bang:

GUIV

I am not convinced that they have fixed the 3.0ltr issues. Hopefully they have and you have a long term reliable vehicle

"may get about the 3ltr all issues associated with these motors where with series one and two". The 3L was never released in the series one (thank f@ck for that), it was a intercooled/efi version of the RD28 from the GQ, still suffers from lag, but very reliable compared to the 3L.

I was been sitting in a series 2 3l that went pop outside mareeba and was in convoy with a series 3 3l that went going up the toowoomba range. Nissan have fixed the 3l........when they replace it with a credible powerplant. To supposedly cure the early failures Nissan just enlarged the sump and changed the oil squirters to spray directly on the underside of the piston, but they are still going pop with monotonous regularity. I havent heard of any changes from this with the CRD version so I am not prepared to trust it; 4.8 VVT is looking the only way for me.

If Nissan cant build a decent capacity diesels for the Patrol they could very easily source a diesel range from somewhere else; cummins 5.9l turbo CRD (244kw, 881Nm) for the real tough stuff and Cummins 4cyl 4L CRD TD (125kw, 600Nm) for economically minded.

I walked in to Village Nissan at redcliffe to pick up some small bits for the 2.8 GU last weekend and whilst waiting for them to find it I started talking to a sales rep about the series 6. Talking about sales specials of a 4.8 auto ST-L for around 60k onroad ........... gotta buy a new grovelling mat now.

Dodgy fuel was Nissan explanation for the primer gumming up. They replaced under waranty. Go visit http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/ for more thorough coverage of the 3ltr issue. There has been little evidence of issues with the series 4, non more so than the the odd cruiser blowing up or others for that matter. There is lengthy recent technical material at http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/ that will put you at ease. Sort of opening a can of worms when you mention the 3ltr but its been done to death on any forum and there is no real evidence to suggest that the series 4 is going to pop any more so than if you go bought a cruiser. You will find others have been burnt with the earlier series 2 models and there friends and there friends friends will have a passion for bagging this motor. Go look for yourself to settle your conscience but you should be fine, no more of a gamble if you bought the 4.2 or jumped fence to the cruiser. Enjoy it Choppa Cheers Richard

Why not go for those CAV filters, if you are worried about contaminated fuel,,, pre the original filter and get all the gunk out, before Nissans standard system .

Or has Mr Nissan got a sub-clause on their warranty somewhere to stop people trying to eliminate problems b4 they start..

I recom that Builder I know, wished he had an inline Cav Filter setup, for $150 (price check ! ) in his new D40 Navara, when he found out that dirty fuel cost him about $5000, and no body put up their hand to admit liability .
Cheers

Bucky

I have posted this information a couple of times before.

A friend had contaminated fuel damage his fuel pump on his 3ltr patrol. Cost $5,600. Nissan refused to cover it under warranty.

He has now put in an additional filter. The advice he received from the Nissan Dealter was that he would lose his warranty.

I was aware of the fuel pump problem and other problems with the 3 ltr Nissan. That's why I purchased a 4.2 ltr.
