Hire a car and head over to the mainland for a day or two, Thailand is a lovely country with warm friendly people but Phuket has become a bit of a holiday island these days.

Probably but I usually get an International D/L from RACV (RACQ, NRMA etc) for a few $ - makes life easier.

have a great time mate, Thailand is a very nice place. been there 11 times and never get sick of it. unfortunately Phuket is very expensive compered to the rest of Thailand. they do have xxxxl but check each polo/ tee shirt if you buy more than one, and once you decide on any item clothing/watches/cd/dvds ect don't let go of it, even if they say i,ll put it in a bag for you. some, not all, are very good at swapping the good quality item you think you are buying for something similar. after going so many times we have got to know a few good people, and this was pointed out to us by them. if you have any questions please ask.

As long as you have a drivers licence the Rent a Car company's will rent you a car. The Thai Police don't worry too much about what tourists do as long as you drive normally.
I think you would enjoy a drive onto the mainland. Go and have a look at Ko Lak which was devistated by the Tsunami. It is about a one hour drive north of Phuket.
Very wet in Phuket most days as it is monsoon season.

I'm afraid I could not agree with that statement - especially in Bangkok :)
One of the advantages of an International D/L is that you can let them keep it.

my experience with the Thai police is have about $200.00 Australian on you at all times and in small notes( in baht). don't keep them altogether either. this is for directions/ tips/donations, say no more.
the police only get about $150.00 a month, and need to supplement their income.
i have driven from Bangkok to the golden triangle and back down the west side, there seams to be many
unofficial check points. they just love hire cars. best bet is hire a driver and his car. about $50.00 aus. a day and that should include fuel, but you will have to pay for meals.
last time i was there we hired a driver, guide and accommodation for ten days from Bangkok to Burma up north and back all inclusive $1000.00, i know that's $100.00 a day but that was for four of us.

Yes I agree, I usually have a stack of 100 baht notes in one pocket. 100 baht usually satisfies the various roadside checks. If you are doing something wrong then it take more to get going again.

Hi Eric, I was the same as you earlier this year when my wife decided she wanted to see Singapore. I must admit I was leaving
Sydney with a very negative attitude really had no interest in going but thought
well she has always done the
camping thing which at first she hated as she had always been a five star girl but now she really enjoys
camping as long as we have the porta loo and all the stuff. Suits me fine if I have to buy the stuff and she goes great so I thought fair is fair and went. Mate I really had a top time and interesting to see how other country's live. I'll tell you what I know Singapore is small compared to here but there transport system would leave here for dead and cleanliness is unbelievable. Drop a cigarette butt on the ground and if your a local 9 out 10 you will do 3 months in jail if a tourist you get a warning. Chewing gum banned in there country. Would I go again you betcha. All I can say is go enjoy and take in the sights which I would imagine Phuket will have too. Have a great trip. Regards Steve M
