Hi All

Just curious to know if hire companies will let you take 4wds up the Bloomfield and CREB tracks??

We are heading to Cairns next month and would be interested in doing both tracks - going up one and coming back the other.

Does anyone know the current conditions of either track or the main points of concern on each track (The CREB track seems a more difficult)?

Thanks, Will.

It depends on who you hire from....check their terms and conditions page, however some seem to have exclusions like this one from Europcar:

========================================
In Australia You must not drive or take the Vehicle without Europcar’s prior written consent:

to Fraser Island;
on the Gibb River Road;
on the Cape Leveque Road and to Windjana Gorge;
on the Cardabia Ningaloo Road;
on the road from Jim Jim Falls to Twin Falls;
on the Larapinta and Namitjira Drives, commonly known as the “Mereenie Loop”;
beyond Chillagoe or Georgetown in a westerly direction;
beyond Cooktown or Laura in a northerly direction;
on the Burke Development Road;
north of Maggieville;
on unsealed roads north and west of Mt Isa;
on the Bloomfield track;
on the Savannah Way;
on the Tanamai Track;
above the snow line from 1 June until 30 October each year (unless Snow Coverage is purchased at the commencement of the Rental Period);

========================================

From thrifty:

d. On any unsealed road (being a road not sealed with a hard material such as tar, bitumen or concrete) unless the Vehicle is a 4WD in which case it may also be used on graded unsealed roads. No Vehicle (including 4WDs) may be used on off road conditions. Off road conditions include but not is limited to fire trails, beaches, sand, tracks, fields or paddocks.

========================================

From Budget:

WHERE YOU CAN AND CANNOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE
3.1 You and any Authorised Driver must only use the Vehicle on a road, which is properly formed and constructed as a sealed, metalled or gravel road.

3.2 You and any Authorised Driver must not, unless authorised in writing by Budget, drive or take the Vehicle:

(3) if the Vehicle is a Passenger vehicle or truck, beyond Cooktown to the North or Lakeland to the West and no further north than Cape Tribulation on the coast road;

(4) On the coast Road fromHelenvale to Cape Tribulation, or from Laura to Lakeland, unless the vehicle is a Group W, 4WD;

(f) on beaches or through streams, dams, rivers or floodwaters.

I too wonder why somedays. I was looking on Friday for a 4wd to hire in 3 weeks time for a couple weeks drive around sothern WA (not knowing exactly where we will end up), so have read quite a few terms and conditions in the last couple of days.

And don't get me started on those $3000 damage waiver clauses!

This is probably the reason they have so many restrictions,

the Bloomfield is an easy drive and a little bumpy in parts.
Don't know about the CREB.

Will,
The Bloomfield track is not a problem at all and can be done in a two wheel drive vehicle nearly all the way.It was different years ago when there was no causeway over the Bloomfield river and the crossing had to be done with respect.The Creb trek is a completely different story and I doubt very much if any hire company will allow you to take the vehicle there.This track should be done with a lot of caution and should not be attempted if it is at all wet as many cars have come to grief there--saying that it is a very scenic route and is well worth it .Even if you only get to Cape Trib. from Cairns it is a lovely trip.

I drove the Bloomfield about 3 weeks back....it was wet and slippery, and very rough in parts. While it may have been possible to do it in 2WD I certainly needed low range in some of the steep parts ......and 4WD just to be on the safe side. There was also a number of sites where bridge works were underway but given the state of progress I seriously doubt they will finish this work before the wet.

Right on Patrol22,

Like most "unsealed roads" it get back to prevailing weather conditions. What may be an easy and pleasant drive in good conditions, can change quite quickly when it rains to become impassable and thus, impossible, at a couple of the larger creek/river crossings.

The bloomfield is a great drive!! Have done it in a few hire vehicles, last traveled in august 06, t/d patrol from budget $80 a day, dirt cheap.

Hi All

Thanks for your input.

I spoke to someone from the wettropics website who gave me a little bit more information on the 2 tracks - As long as its dry they're not too bad, but you do need a decent 4wd for the CREB

For others interested in the condition of the tracks and other information, have a look at this website:
http://www.wettropics.gov.au/

Cheers, Will.

Just one other thing...

The major car rental companies either won't allow you go on the Bloomfield and CREB tracks, or will only allow you to go on the Bloomfield track (only) in a class W 4WD (ie Nissan Patrol)

They say you can't take the X-trails, Santa Fes, Forresters or Pajeros on the Bloomfield Track (which could be probably be done in 2wd according to some).

Hope this helps for future reference - check to be sure though.

Cheers, Will.

We did both tracks in a hire 4WD 5 years ago and no problems - BUT make sure the CREB track is dry. The hire vehcile tyres will be of ??? standard, no recovery gear and you are not supposed to be there anyway.

We used Sugarland Rentals in Cairns and they told us not to go on the CREB track but we did anyway knowing that we were basically self-insured if we had a problem - our risk, we took it, had a ball and would we do it again, yep, too right.

The CREB track is not too hard in the dry but I would not go anywhere near it if there was any sign of rain as it is all clay from memory which is why it is closed for much of the time.

just done the tracks in a hire toyota landcruiser. it had no problems at all. these vehicles were made for such conditions. the hire company was maoi and britz can be hired from cairns campertravel $135 per day. had it for 18 days what a blast. 2 uk girls never done that kind of driving in those conditions before. would recommend it. dont mention the creb though.
