G'day all,
Got back last night from my adventure from sydney to steep point through the centre and back.
I will put a heap of pics up in a week or 2.
I got bogged on a salt lake nth west of Alice. I thought possibly winching myself out may have initially cracked the first bullbar.
2 weeks in Kalgoorlie and a new bullbar under warranty. I monitored it on the french line and have now snaped the second bullbar. My average speed was 15 kph so i was not pushing the nissan hard at all.
Anyway will talk more over the next few days

Peter,
Is it the Nissan steel Bar or an aftermarket one ?
If Nissian, where did they break ?
Mine seems to be OK at this time, BUT. I did loose the splash guard that is attached between the Bull bar & cross member. It's somewhere on the western end of the Rig Road.

I was going to ask the same question as Vince in a slightly different angle, Steel or Alloy.
Bloke in Emerald buys a new Merc Sprinter, wastes his money on an Alloy bar , 3 weeks later he whacks a roo and bends it and breaks a driving light for good measure, Alloy is OK for city driving look gooders, My steel bullbar has rolled 85 tonne 15 m,would'nt like to try that with the pussy bars

Sorry, I didn't fully answer vince's question. It is the steel bar. I have pics of it but I have to go through quite a few but i will be putting them up within a week.

Sounds like you had a good time.

Whereabouts did you get bogged Nwest of Alice? I am heading in that direction next year.

Cheers

Had a great time. Just been going through the pics today.
The salt lake was on a private track on the way to a sacred site. It was amazing and I was privalaged to be invited to see and photograph the sacred site. A few hours West of Tilmouth. The Custodians of the land are the "Forgotton Artists".A landcruiser got through but I went straight down. Took 5 of us just unser 2 hours to get it out. Was a great experience to dig a hole and bury a tyre.

Sounds great Pete.

Digging holes and burying tyres is a PIA I am sure.

Most vibration damage I had from the last 5 weeks and 13,000 clicks was the Lightforce 170 that vibrated to pieces, my left hand indicator bracket break and one can of rice cream not packed securely enough.

Also witnessed yet another GU Patrol lose an alloy wheel on the Birdsville Track near Clayton St and a BushTracker lose it's big water tank on the inside track (yep - split it open too).

Cheers
Andrew envious of your Forgotten Artists adventure, but off to Oak Valley for a week soon.

Peter

Yep, located some lakes on the map in the general area. I will be going north west of there again next year on a cross country adventure.

Cheers

Hey Andrew,
Was actually a good experience as I had only heard about how to do it. Had never put it in practice. Having said that it was dark too. No pictures though as I didn't think it appropriate.
The amount of breakdowns I came accross was amazing this trip
too. Came accross a landcruiser with alloys and 6 broken wheel studs.
Of course the usual black fellas with no jack, flat tyres and run out of fuel.
There was a few other problems with the nissan too but I will mention those when I get some pics up.
Did Ian tell you of the snake he caught?

Hey Extfilm, I had the same problem last year with my 2004 Navara STR. It was an alloy bar but the main issue was the metric fine thread bolts they use to attach the bullbar to the front crumple zone area of the chasis. With constant vibration, the fine thread will crush allowing the bullbar to move a fraction of a mm. It's enough over time to create real problems. In the end, the bolts appeared tight but under corrugations eventually fractured the chasis in the area where the captive bolts were welded. This happened twice and I was only on outback roads, not real 4x4 stuff. It must have been a bit of an issue because they bought out the support arms that then fit from the mounting facility back to the tiedown points. Keep an eye on the threads for compression damage.

Cheers. Mick (Note offending bullbar and vehicle below!)
