We did another trip through Warrawenna on our way to
the Painted Desert.
Stony and Gina, were busy with quite a few travellers coming through as it was the School Holidays.
We took friends up Mt Gill and then did Cockatoo Dunbar the following day. Whilst sitting at the hut having lunch we saw a convoy travelling down suicide with an older model Nissan Nav in 2nd spot. half way down there was an almighty bang and an immediate sound of shale being slid on by the Nav. I thought he must have blown either a diff or CV but it seems he broke a steering arm. What fun on the way down? The arm was removed and taken back to the
homestead to be welded; I am lead to believe this only lasted a few k's when put back on before again parting company. The owners were waiting for a new one from
Adelaide when we left.
Also same day Stony told us that a Disco had they believed holed his sump and were also in a convoy and everyone was taking 500ml out of their vehicles to get the rig back to base after fixing the hole.
We later did in a back window on the
Oodnadatta Track but this seemed such a little hassle after these guys’ adventures.
Warraweena and
the Painted Desert were both very worth the trip, also thanks to Willem and Judith for the Cuppa on our way through.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself except for the broken rear glass. Did you have a cover on it & if so what type ?

Hi Vince,
No cover on it, just tinted inside so it at least stayed in place... I just duct taped over it and it was fine till home. I had been looking into one for the last few mths but as I had never broken a rear window in 30 odd yrs I hadn't rushed I will be now.. LOL
Insurance covered window and tinting so no stress I guess.

Interesting people don't travel with a spare 5 litres of engine oil any more.
Does anybody else do this or am I the only one?
What about any one carrying spare diff or gearbox oil?
I know, I drive a pajero, if it was nissan or toyota I wouldn't need to worry :o)

John
I carry oil & coolant. On the last trip the oil lasted the first day into the Simpson where it cracked the bottle & oiled the back of the ute. This was great for the remainder of the trip, oil & sand / dust over everything.

I always carry 5 litres engine oil and usually 5 litres plus the remainder from the previous 5 litre bottle. I don't carry gearbox/diff oil.
Most diesels use a bit of oil, and my experience is that they use more when idling for long periods (yes, I know this is less than ideal, but necessary for the comfort of my customers on this occasion) - the trip across the Simpson last week required a 2 litre top up for that reason, presumably.
Bottles crack when they bounce around or are squashed. This applies to plastic
water and many other bottles in my bitter experience.
My trailer has a purpose designed box for 3 x 5 litre containers - 2 x oil and 1 x coolant.
Cheers
Andrew.

I carried 10 litres of oil on my last trip and I purchased oil on the trip. I carried a spare air filter, fuel filter and oil filter. I serviced the nav twice in 10 weeks on the side of the road. It's due for another change this week.

oh yes I always carry lots of
water as it can be used in the radiator if necesary and I use vegtable oil for cooking as it can also be used in the brake system if needed. as for diff and gearbox then I would use either the old oil I am carrying or the new oil if it hasn't been used yet. Not the ideal fluids but will get me out of trouble in a pinch.

Hi Blaze,
Must have missed you by a day or so. The group I was with was asked to disconnect that Nissan's battery so presumably he has something running of it all the time or he is going to be a while coming back to get it.
I didn't do Mt Gill but dick the Cockatoo Dunbar loop this time up there and then took the camer down the Coach House road and then onto the Nuccaleena
mine and on into
Blinman. At least I didn't break a stub axle on the camper this time and the that track was quite rough.

You sure ure not taking Des Lexics place on here, 2 identicle replies LOL... Glad to hear you didn't have any hassles this trip. Tracks did seem a bit rougher, or maybe it was because there was dust this time.
Did you hear if the Disco was repaired or not?
Catch yah the next time I guess.
