Hi all

My Patrol insurance is up for renewal, with a 10% increase over last year even though the vehicle is insured for less this year.

Any suggestions for 4WD insurance?
Happy 4 wheeling

Can't help you. Just thought I would tell you that when I moved to the NT mine went up 100%. The insurance company used the high crash rate up here to justify it.

I will be shopping for a better deal when it is up for renewal so if you find a good one let me know.

Woodsy,

I found that the best price I could get with coverage off road was actually through Toyota Insurance (they resell someone else's product but I don't know who).

You may find that you have similar luck through Nissan if yours is newish?

Not a lot of help I know, but might be worth a try.

Cheers,

Chris

and I forgot to mention, if you're a member of a 4wd club try talking to them. Some clubs have discount insurance through affiliations. I'm not so I didn't have that option.

Cheers,

Chris

Beware of Toyota Insurance. It is actually Swann Insurance.
When my 100s was less than a month old, I took the side out of it on a power pole in town. The accident was just stupid carelessness by me, but was on a made road, no question of speed or grog or anything illegal.
The assessor was round to the panel beaters to look at it within a week.
I then spent about 6 weeks on the phone 2-3 times a week trying to get the OK for the repairs. I was lied to, ignored, and generally treated with contempt by the insurance company. There was never any suggestion of rejecting the claim, they just refused to approve the repairs.
In the end, as Christmas was looming and we were booked to leave for Tassie on January 2, I pushed the button for the work and paid for it myself. Picked the car up the last working day before their Christmas shutdown.
It was about 4 weeks later that I finally got reimbursed.
Mongrels they were!!

Hi Woodsy

Perhaps if we new the cars value, model and cost of renewal we could say how your quote compares to ours.

Hi Woodsy,

Cannot help with a cheaper ins co but try this for a comparison.

Divide last years premium lets say $500 into the value of the vehicle lets say $15,000. The answer is $33.33 dollars per $1000 of insured risk.

Now try this against your own company comparing last year's premium to rrisk insured. Now try it again against the new increased cost of insurance to the (their) reduced value of the vehicle.

We are in a battle with NRMA (continued insurance policy rising prices v reduced risk encorporating the fact that we haven't had an at fault claim for 18 years). then tell me that we/you are not the milking cows.

We are leaving NRMA for APIA

Hi Woodsy, we had the same issue back in 2001 when we got our insurance in for our holden statesman 98 model, jumped from $860 in 00 to $1326 on 01 nearly fell over backwards. Value only dropped by a grand which is understandable. Rang NRMA told me a lot of young blokes wanted parts and were getting high on the list for theft cause the parts from a stato would bolt straight into there commodores so we sold it. Tryed other insurance companys and they were dearer and some didnt want to even touch it as it was HSV enhanced. We have everything insured with them and receive quit a good discount because of that. The only issue I have with them is they wont insure any thing inside the Prado eg fridge, inverter,GPS . Only things they class as permanant fixture like UHF. We pay $868.47 anually for 20K. Not sure how good that is but was the cheapest we could find and is fully covered for off road use. Regards Steve M

Many insurance companies offer quotes on line.

I got quotes off the internet when faced with the same situation last year, and saved a heap. Ended up going back to RAA who were offering discounts for membership, over 50, multiple policies etc, and their policy was slightly better than AAMI were offering, as it included an excess-free windscreen. If you've got a heap of extras, you may still need to phone up for a quote.

Hi Woodsy,

I would check with Elders Insurance http://insurance.elders.com.au/ as we are with them and have everything combined, house contents etc. They are a great company, I have had 3 broken windscreens over the last 4 years and now a rear window last week. Had 3 flooding claims on our business and one breakin and our policy has gone down. Not only did they do us a good deal they sort out problems very quickly.

We do repairs on PC's etc and sometimes these are insurance jobs and the easiest we have had to deal with have always been Elders even before we started using them.

Hope you sort out someone.

I have been with SGIC here in South Australia for over 20 years & never had an accident & each year my premiums didnt seem right
+ $400 excess for rating 1
So this year i did something about it i rang around & seeing i'm over 50 now i found APIA was not only cheaper by $8 dollars a month thats $96 a year but also increased the value of the trol by $3K on market value & only $250 excess

We are with NRMA but this maybe only because we have all insurance with them and so get a discount, then there is the 65% no claim bonus and then also because we've been with them for 8yrs straight we get another discount - totalling about $600 all up ( includes H & C insurance.....)

Our 4wd on agreed value with NRMA $880, AAMI $1300 (last yr quote)...

my advice, pick someone good and stick with them...discounts eventually add up....
