Some years ago, a group of aboriginal people travelling from the CSR to Port Headland and back by truck (as I recall) became bogged and most died of thirst.
I may have the details wrong, but the incident remains in my mind. As I recall it was early in the year (height of summer).
Can anyone tell me on which track this sad incident took place, or give some more info or links ?
TIA

I remember the incident. It's why the army was sent in to put in windmills like the one at Well 33 (according to the white managers at Kunnawarritji in 05).

If Jim and I are thinking of the same incidet it's a different one to the one in equinox's post.

I think you will find the incident happened on the Wapet Road (Kidson Track) between Punmu & Telfer which is west of the Kunnawarritji Community & the army did sink some bores along that road after it occurred. Cheers.

Thanks, guys. I suspect that it might have been on the Kidson Track, hence the blue water containers every 100K or so ??
I'm sure it was the incident which led to the bores, but where was it ?

My talks with Kunawaritji mgr Brian Kelly??? in 2007 confirm geocacher and topcat. These deaths and several other incidents in that area finally got the govt to 'send in the army'. Hence the working bores in the area - and the blue water tanks. (several empty/very low in 2007). The story goes on that the govt/army ran out of puff, siting issues and delays. EG the bore our along the Gwenneth Lakes track is erected but not operating. Its water tank is still 'as delivered' to the site - flat packs of steel still waiting to be broken open. All seemingly in good condition.

Incidentally Brian had 28 or so years in this part - believe he might have left the area in about July/August. Held a lot of history.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris, fascinating stuff, especially that bore still waiting to be assembled ! I didn't catch up with Chris, I talked to the woman running the store etc. She had only been there about 10 weeks when we arrived, and brought the rains with us.
Not a great place to be in wet weather.

Dianne just reminded me of a further piont - the construction teams were supposed to do the constructions over the winter. Instead it is said they arrived in October!! Not a good time to be out in the midday sun.

You don't mean the Dog Fence Road incident? It is not the CSR nor near Port Headland.

News Article

Cheers
Andrew.

No. This was an incident which occurred a few years back involving a group of aboriginals travelling to Port Hedland along the Kidson Track. Cheers.

This thread has been a good reminder of how easy it is to get into strife out there and even in this modern era people still die. (Even experienced black fellas)
