Hey fellas,
Sneaked a look at hubby's 4wd Mag, I've been. I have two Landcruiser's (80 series) in my drive way (one is for sale) was lead to believe that we needed these expensive vehicles to be able to get out there and see this lovely country of ours, only to read that a car I grew up with a standard 202 Kingswood 2wd has conquered BIG RED and more what gives with all these expensive must have options.
Cheers
Debbie

hi, my parents did the big trip around the block lasting about 18 months in an old HR towing a pop top, certainly no bells and whistles. i also hasten to add they towed a bogged 4x4 out of a bog with it. and the only trouble they had in the whole time was 1 flat tyre. (sorry fellas).

Debbie you are dead right. We all got around OZ in all sorts of old heaps of #@&% without very many problems and for a darn side less than we pay now in order to avoid inconvenience. I now own a Patrol only because I can now afford it but plenty of people cannot, and are being talked into something they cannot afford. We have been around the block and up the middle and all about this great brown land and never once needed to engage 4wd. We have been in some pretty remote and difficult
places but because we choose to travel alone we pick our time and place.

Steve Ellis if you were driving in difficult
places without engaging 4wd then the more fool you. It obviously wasn't too difficult. Around the block and uo the middle is all bitumen. Maybe you should sell your expensive 4by and go back to a Commodore or something similar

Pesty,
We have to stop meeting like this our partners will ban us from this site LOL.
Firstly I had to check that there wasn't a secret centre fold. Secondly yes I will and thirdly I suggest you hang on to that HJ 202 and yes I know what a 3 on the tree is (learnt to drive in one) cause I feel you could be sitting on a gold
mine there.
Cheers
Debbie

First time I saw
the Rock,
Birdsville, etc was in my fathers 8 yr old EH
sedan.
We did some more serious trekking after that so Dad upgraded to a 2nd hand HQ Kingswood.
Strzelecki track,
Roper River etc, etc. As a kid I couldn't pronounce have the
places they went.
Neither of them missed a beat.

Hi Debbie,
I too learnt to drive in a HQ Kingswood, 3 on the tree and a 202 under the bonnet. This was a work car that was shared with a group of 6.
My own car was a 1975 HJ Kingswood, 202 engine with a 186 head and went from a column shift auto to a 4 on the floor. I installed a limited slip diff in and raised the rear by welding the top and bottom rings of an old set of springs and another piece of 5/8 solid steel round bar, bent into a circle and welded that on too. Raised the rear end up like you would not believe and we took it out to Tomahawk
Creek, out from
Clermont (Qld), for a bit of 4wding. Never got stuck once and had a bloody great time.
I sometimes wish I still had my trusty
old car as it did everything I wanted of it, and had reasonable fuel economy for a Sherman
tank. Ahhhhhh.....the good ole days....

We used to bolt a set of 13"
wheels outside the 14"
wheels for better traction in the soft stuff.
Mine was a 1978 HZ 1 tonner, 308 V8 engine and 4 speed. Used to roam around
Winton (QLD)in the early to mid '80's. Other custom option was 200 litre L/R fuel
tank under the tray. Used to be able to get fuel at bulk prices from the depot if you took on more than 200L. AAhh, those were the days. 300Km return to see the movies on a Saturday night, 80Km return to the pub.
The roads were just wheel tracks really, with grass in the middle, good roads, one could drive really fast if one wished.

Hey - what's with all this late model 70s stuff.
My first was an FC, then EK, then EJ, HK, UC (6cyl) LH, VL, Jack, Jack....
The EJ, lowered, HR disc brake front, 8" widies, no problems getting to the top of
Ben Lomond in the snow season. Had to find the highest rocks and zig-zag over them to stop it getting hung up! This thing went all over Tassie on forest
trails, etc.
We all have it easy these days with the 4WD designs, but maintenance was easier in those days. New motor required - no problem, swap in 2 hours and be gone......

I know what you mean Debbie. My other half is always telling me (after reading in a magazine or worse still a
forum) that we need another toy on, in or under the car.
I used to dig in the heels, but every time I did that we did actually need what ever it was he had found out about - just after we bought a 1990 Patrol (back in 94) he read that we should have a bigger transmission cooler, I smiled and nodded and then within a week we had our auto transmission completly die on us - it cost over $3000 to rebuild. This sort of thing has happened again and again.
Now, if he wants it, I ask why and then say yes! I think he plays the system, but I am no longer prepared to risk it! LOL Now our car resembles a 4WD
shop, but at least it isn't my fault if something goes wrong or we get hopelessly lost or.........
