Yes I was there a month ago and the girl in the shop told us that they were closing all the tourist facilities in November which includes fuel. The reason she gave was that they were experiencing poor visitor numbers and that the tourist facilities were confl;icting with the station activities which are intertwined due to the close proximity of the camping area with the homestead. Apparently the station is owned by a very large company with property adjacent to Tobermorey plus some others in Western Australia. She told us they owned probably 5 or 6 helicopters which they move between Qld and WA so who cares about selling 200 litres of fuel and a few Streets icecreams a week? It's interesting that Hells Gate Roadhouse has now closed up on the Savanagh way also, but the reason for this closure was due to changed liquor laws preventing from selling sly grog to the indiginous people. It seems that was the only way they were making money not from fuel and hambergers. Anyway back to the point when Tobermorey Station closes then we will all have to go back to basics with our fuel planning to get across the Plenty Highway especially if you go via Ross River, Arltunga and cattlewater pass as I did. The first fuel will be available at Boulia in QLD I believe

Thanks for that Graham. Looks like I'll no longer be able to recommend that people stop there, a pity as it is 100% better than Jervois IMHO.
Makes for a much longer drive from this end also.

Al, as you probably know it's a long way to Jervois. They have fuel , a camping ground (that I wouldn't camp on) and only cans of drink and chips at the shop. Basically the shop is set up for the locals. The service is problematical and fairly laid back, compared to Tobermory, and the camping facilities somewhat "basic".

Footy,

It's only around 220ks from Jervois to Tobermory, I think :)))

I've camped at Jervois and did'nt have a problem. The old bloke there, at the time, was OK to chat to. The facilities provided were fine for an overnight stop.

As for the locals, I still remember a cloud of dust approaching at an incredible rate and coming to a sudden halt at the Jervois "store". Once the resultant cloud had dissipated I saw an old Falcon sedan, NO windscreen and various dents and scrapes. Inside the vehicle were four young fellers, black as the ace of spades except for a liberal sprinkling of Plenty Hwy dust. Each of these young gentlemen were wearing wraparound sunnies and had the whitest teeth I have ever seen. They were quite friendly and happy to have a chat regarding their mode of travel etc.

Al, 200K of WHAT ? Took me a good three to four hours as I recall.
Yes the locals are quite friendly, but that doesn't help with the shop ordering decent food...or any at all really.

Have stopped there since 1989, and I still have to wait 30 mts to get served fuel. The attendant is always at St Elsewhere, and doesn't respond to my "hi, anyone here...at all ?" I guess the locals are used to waiting.

Frankly, I found the spot opposite on the river bank was more welcoming.

Oh well there goes our chance for another Tobermorey Cattle station coffe mug...only got 1 left!
Was a great place to fill up and have an ice cream under the tree's. I guess they just concentrate on what they are really there for....

The station beside them, forgotten the name, is only a small one at 500,000 acres, they are 1.7 mil acres.

we no prob with Jervois, when your out there your grateful for any kind of shower....dont complain.....I had to have a shower pregnant with a 3yr old and a 1yr old....I was greateful that I had a stack of room to move ! ! Sure it was a little dirty but we were dirty so who cares!! LOL !!

Footie,

Heard this news on ABC on wed morning while travelling down to Longreach. Girl that was interviewed said also, that "they" thought there was another business to open next year, about 100 kms down the road. Assume this was towards the Alice.

Bloke that owns Tobermorey also owns a place next to us, so he gets around! Also tied up with Great Southern.

Is to close in November this year.

Hooroo...
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

Tobermorey Station, on the NT/QLD Border will be closing down its fuel supply service at the end of November 2007. From that point onwards no fuel or supplies will be available
