To all the seasoned travelers - if I want to photograph a live Wombat in the wild, where should I go?
Not after exact GPS location, just general area/town/district.
thanks........................Keith

There used to be quite a number around the north of Goulburn NSW. Heading to Crookwell, they were a hazard on the road.

Keith,
if you find one do not get to close as they can be very aggressive and have nasty nasty teeth.

In Alexandra Victoria, (and Lake Eildon, Marysville...) we have them in our driveway! They're a hazard around here too, you see a lot more dead wombats than kangaroos around here.

Mark.

Only ever seen one in Tasmania (by the side of the road) when on a camping trip but used to see them when I was a young girl horse riding along fire trails in Sydney (places now built up into urban areas - Forrestville, North Turramurra, etc). There used to be a resident old one up at the Yerraderrie site in the Blue Mountains - maybe he's still around?. I think there are 2 kinds of Wombats - the Common Wombat, found mostly in coastal areas, and the southern hairy wombat found in open country in dry terrain but I think these are very rare, almost extinct. Since they tend to live in burrows and stay there during the day, they are hard to find in general. Best to contact a ranger in an area near you for some guidance. I'm sure they would be happy to help if you ask the right questions. Also here's a link to a Wombat Distribution Map that shows their habitat is very limited in Australia. If you get a pic, maybe you'll come back and send one to us? Good luck!

We saw plenty when staying at Wandilligong which is just out of Bright in the Victorian High Country. From our balcony we could see up to 6 at a time with our torch. Very nice to watch.

Keith, long way from you, but to see them in daylight, Wombat Gully near Mt Ives in the Gawler Rangers SA, drove though there once and was amazed at the number running around and grazing in daylight. Hope this helps.

Yep - agree there - up til October 1999 we were always told Wombats were Nocturnal but there they were the BIG FAT creatures trundling all about the terrain on the way into Lake Gairdner!

Remember 'Fatso the Wombat' from the Sydney Olympics? Well he's now taken up full time residence in the Bendethra Valley and the bugger still hasn't stop growing......

Wilson's Promontory, Vic. Used to be thick with them. They would come into your tent at night looking for food.Ropes were provided up into trees so that food items could be left dangling off ground out of harms way overnight. That was a few years ago, may have changed since, but they sure weren't hard to find.

Definitely still the case.

We were there in June and the little rodents (ok, marsupials) came out all around the place at night.
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Keith_A,
There is supposed to be a fenced in, controlled, colony near Clermont Q. They are not in the wild so to speak and i don't know if they will let just anyone in. (Northern Hairynose)
Cheers,

They are in plauge proportions in Wilsons Prom a few years back. Yes they are wild, but they all seemed to have been tagged by the rangers.

Gee,

Isn't technology great even the humble Wombat can use a computer and tell you where they live LOL
