Hi Folks,
is there anyboby out there who can tell me exact where the Lost City in NT is? I do NOT mean the Lost City in Litchfield NP. All what I know (and that is vague) about this place is that is somewhere between Heartbreak Hotel and Borroloola and it is a landscape with marvellous sandstone formations. And how can I get there? (4X4 vehicle, heli)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers
Helga

Helga,
I believe what you are looking for is at Cape Crawford (Heartbreak Hotel), you would be best with a 4X4 to get there and then you can take a helicopter flight out to "The Lost City".
Hope this helps. Cheers, Nev.

If we knew where it was, then it wouldn't be Lost. :-)

Hi Helga,

We have just got back from a trip "across the top" and visited The Lost City - in fact there are two Lost Cities in the Northern Territory. The one we visited is called "Southern Lost City" and is only a couple of Km off the Savannah Way, approx 120 Km north of Cape Crawford. The road in is very good and you can camp there as it's part of a national park (only a long drop toilet, no water).

We also visited the "Bungle Bungles" (Purnalulu) in Western Australia where the rock formations (Beehives) are very similar but we think the Lost City formations are much better. There's also a great camping spot about 20 Km further north along the Savannah Way called Butterfy Springs with a permanent waterhole and good swimming (Only small fresh water crocs there).

We traveled the whole of the Savannah Way from Mataranka to Normanton (in a 4WD) but did not have to use 4WD at any time as the roads were so good. The only thing we needed was clearance for creek / river crossings, however, we went through in the dry season and it can be a lot more difficult in the wet.

If you care to send me your email address, I can send you some photos of the Lost City. Mine is :- syms@westnet.com.au

Cheers Old Mal

Helga - As others have said, there are several "Lost Cities" in the NT.

One is only accessable by air - heli-tours from Cape Crawford;
Another is aprox 120 klms north of Cape Crawford on the Savannah way. As Mal says, this is the Southern Lost City and is in a National park. Brilliant place, plus you can camp there.

Then, about 20 klms north is Butterfly Springs - small waterfall, sandy lagoon; lovely campsite; walking path etc. Both are well worth camping overnight to explore.

A third is the Western Lost City - North west of the Nathan river ranger station. Accessible by 4WD only, and you need to get a key from the rangers of Linmen National park........Keith

NT National Parks maps show the Lost Cities.
PS: When you're in Sydney, there's a Lost City in the Blue Mountains and I reckon I saw one in WA.
Seems we have his thing about losing our cities in Oz.

Hi
There is more than 1 lost city in the Gulf, 3 i think. If you go to Nathan River station the Rangers can point you in the direction of two of them. Well worth a look, we only got to see one of them due to a recent cyclone the road was closed to the other. The 3rd if a fly in job as mentioned above.
Have fun, the Gulf is my favorite spot in OZ.
PS, watch out for those little lizards in the rivers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they are watching you even if you can't see them
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still
