A friend purchased a $700+ GPS/Navigator for his recent trip to Melbourne. He found the unit got him to his destination using the shortest possible route. In quite a number of instances these were by suburban back streets dimly lit and sometimes not very wide.

He wanted to travel along main roads and found to avoid the back street nightmare he had to have some general idea of where he was going, travel down a main road then let the GPS sort out the route again.

Are there GPS/Navigators that allow you to specify main road routes only and not the shortest route?

It sounds like his route settings were wrong.....

My Navman allows the choice between quickest route and shortest distance with about 5 settings between this IIRC. Sounds like he had shortest distance set.

For $700+ i would be surprised if that navigator didn't have the option to change.....

Not a good idea to select shortest route, better to stick with quickest.

Peter,

I have both TomTom Navigator 6 and CoPilot 6 and they both allow selection of fastest route, quickest route, avoid certain roads, etc. so I would say it just needs customising to suit.

Even with one setting configured, if you deviate from that route, most programs will do an "automatic route recalculation" and give you the revised directions. Some of the cheaper ones will not however and will ask you to perform a U-turn before they put you back on track.

You can also exclude certain roads, such as toll roads and some will even allow you to design your own route on a PC and download it to the navigator program, print it out to send to someone you wish to give directions, etc.

Generally, most programs will provide most, if not all the above. It's just a matter of deciding which suits your desire and pocket the most.

My Garmin Nuvi also allows me to select truck, car or motorcycle.

The truck one keeps on on the main roads

Straight from the manual: ......"drives through any traffic congestion with complete disregard of the traffic laws!"

Thanks for the feedback,
I have learnt something, I don't own a GPS?Navigator, but will do so at some future date. I have also passed your comments onto my friend and he appreciates your comments also.
