I am looking at buying a Pioneer CT Onyx and reading some other posts there is minimal feedback on the pro's and con's of this camper. Price is not an issue however, I want quality and value. We are looking at doing plenty of tripping over the next 10 years so I would like to know if this is a good quality camper. I have gone off the KK because of weight issue and IMO the excessive cost (platinum/limited edition models) which when optioned up is between $40k-50k.
What should I look out for?
Any feedback would be appreciated but I need to make a decision before Nov 1 as they will be increasing the price by another 7% on that date.

Paul,

I'm basically an opportunist, however... A friend of mine has the Onyx, I considered it but was put off by it's weight (extra 140kgs dry) and bought an Argyle SE. Identical in all the essential areas.

Now I'll explain the opportunist bit:

My Argyle SE is for sale in the Trader section. Have a good look IMHO it's a BARGAIN.

I bought a Trakmaster caravan way earlier than I expected and the CT is for sale.
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Thanks GB, I appreciate your comment........and the opportunistic attitude. I'm in Victoria so I really need to look at something here rather than in the west. I did look at your ad though which was a prompter to go and look at the local agent for Pioneer. If my "she who must be obeyed" didn't want the queen sized bed I may have looked closer at yours.
Thanks again for your comments.

Yes, yes and yes.

I don't own one but have researched the Pioneer a fair bit and drooled over them at caravan & camping shows.

The Argyle is my personal choice but if you have the extra bucks for the Onyx, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Just a thought. Have you thought about hiring one first?

Thanks Sand Man,

Appreciated your comment.

Unfortunately because of the imminent price rise I haven't got the time to hire one.

Thanks again.

Paul,
I have an Argyle which is 2 years old with the gulwing box's, all I can say is I am very happy and impressed with it.
Good weight, fair price.

Been to Birdsville on its first trip and then this year went to the Cape even up the OTL without a hitch.

Things I would change if I got another one
- Bigger water tank
- Thicker mattress - because I am a big bugger

I would definitely buy another one and would probable look at buying the Onyx.

Regards

Peter

Thanks Big Show,

The Onyx comes with a 125 litre water tank which is something I thought about (and need) and as far as the mattress is concerned, she who must be obeyed wants an inner spring mattress which should solve the thicker mattress issue.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Paul Mac,
I own the Pioneer Argysle SE camper and have just returned from a 4 month trip with it from Perth to N.Queensland and back. The camper had a good test over rough and dusty conditions and Icouldn't be happier with it.Ihad a minor problem with the slide out kitchen tap and electric brake adjustment which was all fixed promptly on my return(under warrenty). The Onyx has some nice additional features and is slighyly bigger in the sleeping area but I couldn't justify the additional cost as the basics are all the same.I think you will be very happy in your choice.

Thanks Roger,

This is the feedback I'm really interested in. Hopefully the kitchen won't present itself as a problem but I've decided to go with the hydraulic brakes.

I really wanted to know how they stand up to rough roads and terrain and if I encounter difficulties, whether spares and fixing is a problem in the outback.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Paul,

By the sound of it you've done lotsa homework. The house is a bit wider than an Argyle, but the whole trailer is no wider than a Patrol or L/cruiser. Same wheel track width as well. Have owned ours for over 2 years now and spent about 5 months in it around Leonora to Meekatharra last year. No probs and I can close it by myself. Takes about 1/2hr to tidy bits away and hit the road.

Yer right about KK's $$ but that safari roof and Bedouin type awning does have some appeal.

Good luck with your choice,

Thank you Bruce for your feedback.

Yeah, I've done years of research on the best campers. I should be an authority by now but its always good to have first hand feedback on their reliability and practicality from people who have been out in the field in them so to speak.

I also liked the safari roof but for $40 odd grand perhaps a bucket of water over the tent roof might be just as good.

Thanks again.

Thanks Snake.
Yeah, you might see me around the traps. I'm hoping to do a trip to the gulf country next year some time.
I'm looking at strapping down a roll up inflatable ( quicksilver 270 perhaps) on the trailer roof and a small outboard in the gullwing hopefully. I'm also getting a solar panel instead of a generator which hopefully will be fine.

Well, the one we brought was junk. It was one of the lower level units and had nothing but dramas and absolutely shocking after sales service. If your on the west coast may have more success as you can drive to the supplier and demand service. We spent 4 mths in ours, across the Plenty, Tanimi, Gibb, etc, etc.

Leaked water and dust badly, bolts including those on the brakes fell off regularly, sink tap broke twice (different sections), struts died, battery switch stopped working, chassis filled with water (only found when drilling a hole), latches jammed, etc, etc. When I asked for assistance I was blamed for each drama, they did replace broken items but only after insisting. Things may have changed but last year I could have put a match to it.

One other thing, you do get sick of raising the roof, all other campers have fixed bows so you flip it over and it's up. Yep only minor but it's a pain and after a couple of hundred times the bows won't lock in place.

OUCH !
Thanks for your feedback. Sounds like you had a memorable trip.
You didn't mention what State your in or whether the CT was an onroad or offroad model.
The tap sounds like a problem. Someone else mentioned the tap.
In relation to the raising of the roof, if I go ahead and buy I'm having the winch attachment installed which will make raising and lowering much easier.
Thanks for taking the time to respond though.

Qld but doubt it makes much difference apart from the fact if you in WA you could go direct to the manufacturer. It was the off road version. Spoke to 3 other owners on our trip and one other had similar dramas, the other also had failed zips, failed kitchen bearing, etc, the other had only just brought his. After comparing the quality to my mates campomatic mine is built to a price. If I was to buy another I'd go for quality not price and buy either the campo, KK or the gulf.

I also had punctured water tank, tyres are very soft half worn out in approx 10k, awning sags badly so if it rains need to drop a few poles. It just goes on and on.

Hi Paul

We also have bought an Argyle SE although the gull wing boxes were modified to fit our 50lt Chescold, we are very happy with the whole rig. We probably would have bought the Onyx if we could have justified the extra expense. One thing to consider is use ridge poles on the annex roof, they take a bit longer to put up but then you only need 2 ropes and tent pegs out. Makes the annex much tighter.

Rocky
