Anybody know of such beast ? I know there is Email and Fax via HF but is there a service for http ?? (normal internet browsing for those who do not know what http means).

And no, it's not for remote Australian areas (for those who think I am uninformed), it is for Ocean cruising on a 50' sailing catamaran.

thanks

There is no HF data protocol robust enough to provide the speed required for internet browsing, HF is only suitable for passing low volume data.

No service that I have heard of, but all the gear is available for sale.
For browsing, a RBGAN unit would be better- Last time i checked HF had max 9600 baud- super slow.

Pactor 3 is about the closest you'll get. At 14MHz (whatever) even with sophisticated encoding techniques the bandwidth is simply not available to permit the data rates required for web browsing - end of story.

I think most yachts use Satellite for web access.

Satellite is your best bet.

You can get reasonable Satellite data service from Optus...

Well, I had a couple of meals and a few cuppas at a station in outback SA the other week. All their communication was by high speed broadband, by satellite. S'pose it would be no different out at sea.

They have phones in the various homes around the homestead complex.

In the school room there is a computer with a camera and a microphone. Quite a sophisticated programme for the school of the air. In one of the houses there is an identical set up, only with a monitor as big as our telly. With kids of different ages, some of their online sessions clash, so two computers at a time are going full tilt.

Also a thumping big TV in the lounge room, on satellite.

That should be enough for you in a 50 foot boat.

Satellite high speed broardband internet.

Regards,
Laurie.

thanks for the answers
I am aware of the satelite solutions, but was interested in HF for a specific solution. Speed would not be the main problem though
thanks anyway
